Stag Series #3 is August Schells interpretation of a traditional Franconian Rauchbier (smoke beer). Rauchbiers date back to the early 1500s, when green malt was dried over open fires. The grain picks up the smokey flavor from the fire, and this is carried over to the beer. Stag Series #3 uses a blend of malts smoked over beechwood and cherrywood to create a twist on the traditional style. The remainder of the malt bill includes Dark Munich Malt, Caramunich, and a touch of black malt for color. It is hopped with Tettnang and Sterling. Release is Mar 1, 2011

poured into a tall tulip, color is slightly cloudy leather brown, smells like a bottle that somebody dropped a cig butt into it. I checked...it was fine. Nice cream head, taste like a pork chop, great mouthfeel and carbonation. I didnt note much alcohol, which might explain the smoky cigarette-like addictive drink-ability. I hope they make this a regular item. Ive had the schlenkerla rauchweis and the wheat rotten bananas flavor is off-putting. Schells is very nice and a great introduction to anybody to rauchbier

Aroma: spicy bread, smoke and some sweet malts, earthy, clove, everything a rauchbier should be. Pours amber/light brown, very clear with a 1/2" off white head, head dissipates quickly to a thin ring of foam. Flavor is pleasantly smoky, bready and toasty, some malt sweetness, very malt-forward overall. There is just enough bitterness for balance, but hops are in the background. Smooth on the palate, medium body and carbonation, very tasty beer.

Bottled sample via oakbluff. Dark brown in colour with medium carbonation. Aromas are of hardwood smoke, wet wood, pale malt, and mild stone fruit. Smoke is the star on the palate as well, backed by notes of cherry, lightly toasted malt, and moderate herbal hopping.Medium bodied and a bit more bitter and hoppy than most rauchbiers Ive had. The cherry aspect weights it down a bit (even though its a mild component overall), but this is a pretty damn good smoked beer.

Thanks to Chris... light copper, clearish, light tan head, not much to look at... smoked malts, ash, a hint of salty pork, a bit of a skunk generic finish... taste is a bit watery and generic, a boring smoked lager, some interesting notes but not knocking me over

On tap at Haute Dish, pours murky reddish brown with off white head. Aroma has a nice balance of smoke, meat, and nice caramel and toffee malts, with a touch of burnt toast and bread. Taste is nice, with a really nice balance of smoky and sweet that balances to a creamy but slightly sweet and dry finish. Very good.

Smokey yet malty aroma which for a rauchbier is different because normally its all smoke. The flavor is subtle for a rauchbier, the smoke doesnt pummel the taste but it definitely is there with a hint of smoked meat in there. Very good rauchbier.

Tap. Smells like campfire, bacon, ham, subtle malt sweetness in there somewhere. Pours a deep ruby. Taste is upfront smoke. Tastes like licking a firestarter. Nice malt base to it, finishes slightly sweet. Solid carbonation. I can get into this.

From a keg at Firkin Fest, 2011. A little light. Simple and straightfoward, with light-medium smoke in the aroma and flavor on a lager beer. Red color. Flavor and aroma is good, if not very strong.

Bottle. Chestnut brown in color with a small white head. Aroma is sweet caramel, with some peat, and smoked malt. Big smoke flavors in the taste that linger on throughout this beer and into a long finish. Caramel sweetness is present too. Something strange like seltzer water towards the finish. Pretty solid smoked beer. Smoke never overpowers, but it definitely is assertive in both the aroma and taste.
