Had this as Altbayreuther in a bottle. Clear dark red-brown body with a bubbly cream colored head that dissappears quite fast. Aroma of roasted malt, caramel and coffee. Medium carbonation. Flavor of roasted malt, slightly acidic finish. No hops apparent in there.
The aroma promised more than the flavor could keep, so I agree with Pernille: overrated brew. Pernille (518) - Copenhagen, DENMARK - NOV 17, 2005
(Bottle: "Altbayreuther Braunbier - Das Echte".) Sour aroma. Color is orangy brown. No head. Malty flavor with an acidic note. Overrated. MiP (15667) - Sønderborg, DENMARK - SEP 12, 2005
Bottle. Quite malty, a little yeasty aroma. Clear brown colour, sparkling. Small, big-bubbled head. Malty, slightly roasted flavour. Quite high carbonation. Aftertaste is just bitter. Flavour starts off nice, but unfortunately fades away after a few sips. dortmunder (961) - Herdecke, GERMANY - SEP 8, 2005
Bottled. Light brown colour.Cookie malt aroma. Malt-accented taste with a caramelly touch. Rather sweetish.
Hints of hoppiness in the finish. Quite decent and somewhat different from a dunkel. larsga (7539) - Oslo, NORWAY - SEP 7, 2005
Huge, seemingly everlasting head. Mahogany brown body. Aroma faintly sourish (uh?) with hop notes. Taste is subtle, harmonic, and well-rounded, although not too strong. Aftertaste just fades with teasing bitterness notes that last surprisingly long. Reminiscent of many of the Franconian dark lagers I’ve had, but distinctive, and yet not so interesting. In the typically German way the taste grows stronger as you drink. (On tap at Schinner.)

(Bottle 50 cl) Comes as "Altbayreuther Braunbier - Das Echte". Dark amber - slightly hazy - with a small, creamy head. A touch of metal in the nose. Weird underlying slight tartness. Lightly burned malt character with a pronounced dry, lightly bitter finish. Not very full-bodied - actually a bit watery. Very unusual and atypical German beer. And not really your typical Dunkel. 230605 joergen (28102) - Frederiksberg, DENMARK - JUN 23, 2005
Cloudy orange coloured with a small off white head.
Nice malty aroma with notes of fruits and corn.
Malty flavour with fruity notes and a well balanced hoppy finish.
Thanks to Papsoe for sharing. rauchbier (3888) - Isle Of Beer, Lincolnshire, ENGLAND - MAR 13, 2005
Bottle, from shop at Bayreuth Hauptbahnhof. Copper bronze, good off white head and gentle condition. Low soapy hop aromas, caramel sweet and malty in the mouth with some background hops. Spicy finish with hints of malt and bread.

Cereal, dusty, mustard seed and vegetable nose - funky! (but not necessarily good). Clear brown color and low head. Malty front but vegetable tastes - cabbage. Burnt roasted end. Thin and quick. Not so good. YogiBeera (2569) - New Jersey, USA - JAN 2, 2005
UPDATED: MAR 23, 2005 Jan 2, 2005(6,3,5,2;11 - 2.7) No head, wonderful red brown amber color. Cellery, malt, mustard seeds and cereal nose - yes, weird. Cereal malt, slightly sweet but intense cabbage taste and...I’m not a big friend of cabbage even though I’m a Kraut.
RERATE: Bottle was Altbayreuther Braunbier which the brewer confirmed is the former name of Schinner Altfranken Braunbier. One of the Rerates that suprised my by the difference in the outcome. This time I noted: Nice brown red color, fast diminishing head, soft carbonation. Molasses, honey and caramel toffee nose. Very clean in taste and smell. Sweet honey malt and cookie taste - medium lasting, nice but a bit to sweet for my taste.
