Combines the roasted malt flavours of porters and stouts with the bright hoppiness of the American IPA. Dry hopped for additional flavour and aroma, without adding unnecessary bitterness.

12oz bottle from Tim for my 44th. Poured a dark black medium density under a foamy dark tan head. Aroma has some burnt honey sweetness, cola, Tootsie Roll chocolate, choclate muffin mix. Flavor is big roasty notes up front, chocolate toasted muffin, chocolate cake, touch of orange citrus. Medium bidy, creamy fuller mouthfeel and slightly stronger carbonation.

This bottled brew from a bottle shop was served at a cool temperature and poured a small sized head of foamy tan colored bubbles that were quickly diminishing and left behind a softly carbonated body opaque black brown colored body and a fair lacing. The balanced aroma was mild hop. The mouth feel was tingly at the start and at the finish with a lingering malt hop aftertaste. The nice flavor contained notes of black malt and hops. Delicious and one I would certainly buy again.

Black pour, one finger, creamy to oily beige head that has great retention and leaves surprisingly solid lacing. Aroma is roast, citrus, pine, a little grassy/skunky, a touch of garlic. Flavor is roast, char, woody, earthy hops, pine, citrus peel and again a touch of garlic. Medium body, creamy entry, slick, slightly dry finish and medium, sharp carbonation. Decently enjoyable, despite a couple off notes.

Growler ($6.50 for 64floz), poured into an imperial nonic glass. Musty hops notes hit my nose first, then with some acclimation there are aromas of fresh greenery, some molasses, and hints of black licorice. Looks almost black with some brown glowing at the bottom, along with a soft light-brown head. Odd as it sounds, this beer is leafy and woodsy. Textually spot on for my liking, medium-full in body and carbonation is mild-moderate. A black IPA with good balance, worth a shot again when I cannot decide and don’t know what style I really want. Still pretty musty smelling upon subsequent pours, similar to hop pellets.

Black. Kaki head, lacy creamy. Hoppy evergreen pine aroma . Ripe fruits. Resin. TAste is equal with chocolate and cola notes, not heavy in black character.Very smooth, hops blend well with the malts. Really good black ipa, almost wouldn’t know it was black in a way but not. very smooth, really good one. Besides not being stronger I cant say anything I don’t enjoy about this.

Aroma is dark malts, light citrus and spicy hops. The flavor is dark malts, grapefruit, mild chocolate and a spicy/bitter hoppy finish.

funky dank flavor of ear wax and earth with some malt in there and decent enough hop character. some pine and lighter citrus the malt is infected and that gives it good character. does not give away bigger alcohol.

Rich dark brown coloured body with a nice two centimetre tall creamy tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, resinous hops and a lot of chocolate and piney scents that show some alcohol as well. Medium-bodied; Rich malty flavour at first with the roast the strongest and then some coffee and chocolate complexities come through - then the bitterness from the hops really shines through with an almost fruity finish and a touch of alcohol near the end. Aftertaste is rich and enjoyable with some sweetness from fruit and chocolate and still a lot of bitterness make this a very nice drink. Overall, a nice Black IPA with a solid profile and smooth complexities throughout. Well worth trying if you can find it! I sampled this sixteen ounce pour on draught during a Schlafly Tap Takeover Event at Whole Foods in Pentagon City (Arlington), Virginia on 17-February-2017 for US$4,00 at the end of my driveway!

I was so excited to see this beer on tap! I’ve never had an IPA that had a dark appearance like this one, and the darker malts definitely added a lot of roasty, toasty flavors that mixed well with the hoppiness of this beer and really balanced them out.
