Sampled on tap at the Tap Room, STL. An incredible brown that must be experienced. Dark brown with a generous tan head. Aroma and flavor are dominated by coffee and bitter, dark chocolate. Caramel and some spicy, piney hops are also in the mix, but are in the background. Full-bodied, light to moderately carbonated with a dry, clean finish. Very close to porter in style. UPDATED: APR 7, 2013 8/30/2012: Fresh draft pint at Schlafly Bottleworks in a standard pint glass. It poured a near-opaque dark reddish-brown color with lasting beige foam and LOTS of lace. Great appearance. Toasty and roasty aromas with a great mix of American and English style hops: earthy, citrusy, not too much grapefruit, some evergreen resin. Flavors of dark toasted husky whole grain bread, ever-so-slight residual malt sweetness, tangy with a great grain/hops bitter balance. Hint of chocolate milk and Mexican hot chocolate. Very light char. Mmmm. Medium body and carbonation, lingering toasty, bittersweet aftertaste. Yes, I’m a Schlafly homer, but this is a downright delicious beer.
UPDATE 9/15/2012: sampled again on tap at the 2012 Schlafly Hop In The City festival, and I stand by my high rating. Applying cask-conditioning to this particular beer was a natural choice, and was more expertly done than others that day.
UPDATE 4/6/2013: my rating for this beer just keeps going up. I was lucky enough to taste it again at the Schlafly Repeal of Prohibition fest, this time cask-conditioned with Simcoe dry-hops. Most delicious version yet. Mmmm.

Perhaps the best aspect of Schlafly’s House Brown is its balance. It fits comfortably in the medium-bodied range. The flavors of chocolate, caramel, hazelnut, roasted barley, and herbal hops all mix well together. Nothing is overpowering or out of place. Probably not worth the 9.29 I paid for a pint, but then, airport beer is always overpriced. Draft poured into a shaker. Drank as "John Brown’s Ale" at John Brown’s Pub. Pours a clear nut brown with about a finger of off-white head. Aroma of pine and roasty malt. Taste is about the same. Medium finish that is mild to moderate in bitterness.
Had this on tap at Hop in the City on draft for the second time, increasing aroma and taste to 8 each and overall to 14. This beer surprised me yesterday. Very good!

From the cask, served in a Schlafly imperial pint glass. Poured a clear dark brown with a creamy off-white head.
Aromas of roasted malts, nutty coffee and caramel toffee, a light fruitiness and a touch of earth.
Moderate carbonation and a crisp, dry, slick, creamy smooth medium bodied mouthfeel.
A nice roasted malt taste, nutty coffee meshed with light flavors of cocoa and caramel, a subtle fruitiness in the middle, an earthy bitterness towards the end, the alcohol is slightly noticeable at the end too, and a dry malty finish.
I really enjoyed this, easy, quaffable drinkability, I don’t know why I hadn’t tried this before at the Taproom.
