8/11/12. GTMW - served up as "Oud Bruin Sour Brown." Amber pour with a small khaki head. Light funk and tart cherries in the aroma with hints of caramel and malt as well as a touch of vinegar, wood, and vanilla. Rating from mid-Nov. Deep brown with a nice ruby/garnet highlight. Very creamy off-white head with a modest height. Nice caramel nose with a strong sweetness, staw, mild barnyard notes, light raisin, slight cherry and light grainy presence at the end. Taste starts with a smooth barnyard funk early that moves over to a smooth caramel middle with fruity notes of cherry and raisins with a semi-tart finish at the end. Body has a modest fullness and a dry puckering end. Overall a very odoriferous and tasty brew. Finish is light and adds to the sweet malt and estery notes but not overpowering. A: The pour is a murky dark amber color with a mild off-white head forming.
S: The nose starts off incredibly metallic. Almost like steel or the iron rich character of vitamins. There’s some mild maltiness along with a burnt coffee note and bleach.
T: To quote Steinbeck, this one’s "fulla piss an’ vinegar". Cardboard, stale bread, and solvents also make a guess appearance.
M: The body is medium and the carbonation is low to medium I suppose.

Draft, originally sampled at Hop in the City but this rating is from a growler courtesy of hwwty4. Roasty, woody, very lightly winey and fruity aroma. Clear deep red-brown color with a slight, fading head. Flavor features hints of cherry, faint sourness, wood, faint earth, more malty roast, faint sweetness and brown malts throughout. Smooth, very lightly tart and mildly effervescent, body is medium. Okay, perhaps not quite as refined as Old World examples.

Tasted 10/4/10. Pint from the Tap Room. Filtered with a dark amber hue. Lacing light khaki head. Floral and perfumy head. Aromas of cooked sugar and a nice berry undertone. Medium bodied with a very lively palate. Tart, tangy and sour. It hits all of the palate. Flavors of tart cherries and cranberries. Mildly earthy with a dash of pepper and a slight vanilla sweetness. Draft purchased inside right before Hop in the City 2010 started. This was the festival beer, so I wanted to grab a whole one early so I didn’t have to fight the crowds outside for one later. Turned out to be a good call. Pours a cloudy reddish-brown color with a small beige head. Aroma of tart cherries, lightly toasted caramel malts, wood, and subtle spices. Flavor of tart cherries, spices, caramel, vanilla, wood, and mineral notes. Medium-bodied, with mild carbonation and a mildly sour mouthfeel. Schlafly’s first attempt at a sour is an admirable one, as this is a sessionable, drinkable example of the style that I would use as a gateway for those trying a sour for the first time. Had a glass of this at Schlafly’s Tap Room. Thanks to Vyvvy for adding it here. This style is definitely not a favored one for me but this offering was very nice. Even I liked it. Dark reddish brown with a one finger tan head. Nice spider web lacing. Flavor was light sourness and deep resonant dark fruit. Flavor was also lightly sour with that delicious fruit. On occasion plums would just jump out and cherries were steady. Nice caramel and some interesting complexity.
