Overwhelming pumpkin flavor. It’s odd, its not pumpkin season, so this isn’t real. More of a spice bomb.

Bottle pour into shaker pint glass. Appearance is very dark brown with nice sparkle, finger-width off-white foamy head with poor retention. Aroma is strong pumpkin spices. Taste is as aroma. Palate is medium bodied with smooth, creamy texture, average carbonation and finish like taste. Overall, it’s billed as a mix of two of their classics, but the stout quality is lost behind all of the pumpkin spices. Pour on tap at the brewpub, dark black pour with tan head, aroma brought notes of big cinnamon, ginger, and clove into a bit of cocoa powder, roast with a slight hint of the pumpkin, slight coffee. Taste was a mix of caramel, chocolate, coffee into a bit of pumpkin, big pie spice with cinnamon, ginger, hints of earth, finishing spicy.

On tap at the Tap Room. It poured a dark brown color with a small tan head. The aroma was fairly light with some roasted malts, chocolate and a nice amount of pumpkin. The taste was dark roasted malts with a smooth, slightly bitter-sweet chocolate in the middle. The pumpkin was faintly present throughout but more so at the end. On tap at Schlafly’s tap room. Aromas are a kapow of pie spice that covers up almost everything else and seem a little odd given the dark brown body. Flavor is a nice Mix of chocolate and pie, with most of the emphasis on the pie. It’s smooth and sweet with a nice silky feel on the palate. Had this at the Schlafly hop in the city festival in my sampler glass, and loved it so much I bought a growler of it. This review is from a growler that is a few days old. The beer maintained its quality very well in the growler. Schlafly growlers seal tight and keep the carbonation well.
The appearance is pretty good, especially for a growler serving. It had a lightly tan one finger head that dissipated into a thin sheen on top, with ok lacing.
Aroma is wonderful, but not too over the top. You can really tell that it’s a pumpkin beer, spiced, and a stout. Pumpkin aromas are subtle and a little sweet (I can see this may have been made with butternut squash too, at least that’s what it smells like to me). The spices are absolutely perfect for a fall/holiday/pumpkin beer, not too over the top but obvious and delicious, with nutmeg and clove standing out, and most importantly (at least to me) not an overload of cinnamon. Roasty stout aromas complete the olfactory experience!
The taste follows the smell quite closely. Roasty malts are followed by a nice spiciness and a moderate pumpkin flavor. There’s just a tinge of hops bitterness to complete what is a very balanced and delicious beer.
Mouthfeel is medium, with a lightly roasty and spicy aftertaste. Carbonation is light but ample, creamy, and not inappropriate for the style.
Overall I think this is a wonderful pumpkin beer and a very nice fall treat. I recommend trying a glass if you can get some before it’s all gone. Anyone who loves pumpkin beers should find this one quite interesting. Sampled on tap at the 2012 Schlafly Hop In The City festival in both cask and kegged formats. It poured an opaque orangish brown color with no head. The cask version was nearly flat, clearly not ready or perhaps not primed with enough active yeast. Predictable aromas and flavors of pumpkin pie spices + middle-of-the-road roasty stout. Malty, toasty, squashy, nutmeg, clove. Medium body, very low carbonation. Smooth and well-balanced considering all that’s going on. Many attendees loved it, but I just couldn’t. Pours dark brown with a mahogany hue and a small tan head. The aroma has lots of spices, some pumpkin and hints of roast, but the pumpkin ale aspects are significantly bigger than the roasty malt - spices are most up front. Medium / full body with mild carbonation. The flavor begins much like the aroma and doesn’t really seem that much different than a regular pumpkin ale with the heavy spice and pumpkin. The finish has some smooth roasty malt coming through that balances the spice well. Decent beer. Not my thing, but good for a pumpkin style ale.
