4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Super-dry, with pit fruits and warming malts. Long on the palate, totally in balance, and the freshness of the flavors came to mind as I carefully sipped at this one. Not bright, hi-liter esters awash in alcohol, but fresh, well-crafted, and carefully-constructed. Perfect precursor to a rich Thanksgiving dinner. I have high standards for American versions of Belgian styles, but this quad is distinctly American without losing any of the careworn aspects of the style that make it so special. Really well done.
Backlog from Brony Bottle Share at Travlrís. Reddish brown with small offwhite head. Dark fruit, caramel malt, earth. Eh. Boutip (6344) - Gatineau, Quebec, CANADA - APR 16, 2015
Bottle: Poured a hazy dark brown color ale with a large brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of dry fruits notes with some residual sugar notes and solid malt backbone. Taste is also a balanced effort between some dry raisins and other fruits with some residual sugar and just enough attenuation to balance the whole thing and some caramel and light toffee notes also discernable. Body is about average with good carbonation and alcohol is not apparent. Not as sweet as I was anticipating which is a good thing since Schlafly beer can be overly sweet. Good drinkability with just enough complexity for the style. MrChopin (4304) - Baltimore, Maryland, USA - MAR 30, 2015

Sampled while visiting IL in June, 2014. 750mL bottle. Amber brown pour with a small tan head, mild lacing. Big aroma, a touch boozy, lots of dark fruits, brown sugar, even berries, husky caramel malts. Nice flavor, smoother maltiness, dark fruits, brown sugar, Belgian yeast. Tasty. THOUGHTS: Sort of straddles the line between an abt and a quad. It could have had a slight infection, but I think it was just the sherry-like aspect of it fooling me, but there was a slight sour or tartness to it. Either way it was very good. Very complex. Fruity in many different ways. Way better than I imagined it would be. I highly recommend it.
TECHNICAL: Drank 4/28/2013. Bottle. Poured a medium orangey amber, which borders on brown in the glass when held out of the light. It had a small, fizzy, tan head that mostly diminished. The aroma had heavy caramel, molasses and burnt caramel; light citrus hops; light to moderate yeast; grape raisin, plum, prune, apple pear, peach, pineapple, cherry; honey brown sugar, alcohol; dark fruits and lightly fruits alike; and dark candy sugar. The initial flavor was moderately sweet and lightly acidic; while the finish was moderately sweet and lightly acidic and sour with a long duration. There was caramel, molasses, honey, brown sugar, prune, raisin, plum, peach, pear, alcohol, dark candy sugar, pineapple, apple, cherry, cranberry and moderate yeast. The slightly more than medium body might have been thicker but the carbonation made it seem lighter. It was a little oily and then slightly dry with rather fizzy carbonation and a lightly alcoholic finish.
