Tap room. Pours a light golden with a small creamy white head. Aroma is nicely smokey, woody with notes of sweet doughiness and a bit of meaty character. Flavor is much the same, lots of the woody smokiness that sits over a sweet biscuit note finishing crisp and clean. Medium body and a soft carbonation. Excellent rauchbier
3-23-2014 Deep golden-orange color and almost zero head but nice lacing. Nose is very plain with not much strong smoke presence but does have an overall sweetness too it. Flavor starts out with a smooth cherry wood flavor, sweetness from the malt really balances the smooth smoke presence. Light fruity flavor with notes of apple and tart cherry. Body is modest with a light oily mouthfeel and low carbonation that accentuates this. Overall a well balanced but a bit on the sweet side. On draft. Aroma of smoked ham. Flavor of smoke that dissolves and gives way to a solid lager. No sweetness, just a nice, clean progression of flavors. Tap at Meridian Pint. Pours clear amber with a medium, frothy off-white head, medium retention with good lacing. Aroma is sweet smoked malt, ham, light earthy hops, pear and pineapple esters. On tap at the Schlafly Tap Room source. Pours a clear golden orange with a classic white head that stays around. Good stuff all the way. Nice smoky aroma with a taste of sweet caramel malt, bread dough and smokehouse goodness. UPDATED: JUN 18, 2014 Tasted from keg at the 2013 Schlafly Hop in The City festival in a mini weiss glass. It poured a golden amber colour with weak off-white foam, much lighter than I expected. This was CRAZY smokey, overwhelmingly so. It masked all other aspects. I thought I enjoyed some smoke malt, but apparently only small percentages, not 60% of the grainbill. UPDATE: Tasted at St. Louis Brewer’s Guild Heritage Fest 2014 in a cool nonic sampler glass. It poured a mostly clear copper colour with sudsy off-white foam, lasting with a little lace. Grainy, malty-sweet with a nice noble hoppy balance, and PROFOUNDLY smoky. The smoke malt is too overwhelming for me, but I freely admit well-crafted Oktoberfest-like traits still shone through. As such, very true-to-style. If you like Rauchbier, you’ll love this one.

Growler shared by a friend. Pours a crystal clear copper with an offwhite head. Nose is richly smoky, beechwood, light caramel sweetness noted and very clean. On tasting, light sweetness, bacon, smoke & a woody note. Low hoping. On tap, it poured an amber color with a small white head. The aroma was very smokey, almost like bacon with some malty notes and woodsey aromas. The taste was smokey but very well balanced. The body was medium and the finish left behind a bacon flavor. Nicely done.
