This beer is aged on new Missouri oak. The wood has a medium toast, which helps to caramelize the sugars in the oak and adds a nutty character to the beer as it soaks into the wood. Leave the corkscrew in the kitchen drawer and pop open a beer that will reward you with more flavors than most wines can dream of.

Bottle. Pours a slightly hazy red-copper color with a light tan head. A lot of sweetness, a little oak and hops on the aroma. Upon first taste, it seems a bit more on the English BW side of things. So its a little too sweet for me, but the oak is more apparent in the taste than the aroma. A decent BW, but too sweet for my tastes.

Rating #400.

2007 batch on draft at the tap room. Drank this in the company of Duane, drmatt, xmarcnolanx, and vyvvy. Pours a nice clear dark amber color, no head to speak of. A bit of oak and caramel maltiness in the nose. I think this was served a bit cold, and the oak flavors were a bit subdued. Very well-balanced though. Malty, dark fruit sweetness, balanced by some slight hop presence. Some vanilla and tannin as this warmed up a bit. Very tasty, very drinkable.

750 ml bottle, 2007 edition. Clear coper body topped by a moderate beige head that leaves some creamy and coating lace on the snifter. Aroma of vanilla, oak, bready and toasty malts, and earthy hops. Creamy, nearly full body with subdued carbonation. Taste is bready and toasty, with caramel and oak tones. Hops arent assertive but provide an ideal balancing bitterness.Alcohol is hidden except for some welcome warmth. Excellent barleywine here, with a skillful use of oak conditioning.

Bottle courtesy of vyvvy. This is a nice brew cut out of a different mold than most bws. Not overly sweet, malty, or cloying, this brew is much like Old Numbskull. Dry, salty finish w/ hints of oak and vanilla. Delicious.

2006 750 ml bottle via trade with mreusch - This was the second beer of the evening and went over pretty well with the non-beer geeks. Pours a hazy mahogany color with a 1/2 finger thick off white head. Faint spotty lacing. Aroma is toasted malt, oak, and light esters. Flavor is lightly sweetened toasted malt, faint vanilla, oak, and light esters. Alcohol is well hidden. A very smooth, easy drinking, medium body Barleywine. I think what I like best about this beer is that it doesnt kick you in the balls like a lot of BWs do. A very good beer. Thanks Matt.

Red/amber color with a beige head that is quite pretty. Aroma and flavor is dominated by oak, whick reminds of a lazily made chardonay. Very one dimensional. Not a beer that I will seek out again.

Pours an orange-ish copper with slight haze and off white head. There is some spotty lacing clinging to the glass too. The aroma is tough to pick up and discern. I get some mild and vague dark fruity esters, some wood and then a bit of booze. The aromas are fairly well melded together. The taste is a nice marriage of both barrel aged notes and some malt and dark fruity barleywine sweetness. The wood and dark fruit hit first. The dryer boozy tannin like flavor hits later and builds toward the finish creating a dry ending to the taste. The barrel age seems a bit more dominant than the classic barleywine notes. Id prefer the opposite or a bit more of a balance. Still high on the yumminess scale.

UPDATED: OCT 15, 2008 Bottle courtesy thedm and hotstuff: 06 bottle pours cloudy orange/brown with no head. Oaked citrus, bananas and floral hops in the nose. Dry, woodsy mouth feel leads the way to a sweet honey flavor with a mildly piney hop finish. Pretty good. Rerate: ’07 Bottle...more of a translucent copper color with a minimal cream head. Nose had notes of caramel malt, vanilla, oak, plums and some brown sugar. Hmmmm, so far much different than the ’06 bottle...flavor was intense caramel/toffee flavors with a strong oak presence, notes of vanilla and some light fruity esters present as well. Much, much better than the previous bottle. Rating reflects most recent bottle.
