3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
UPDATED: MAY 18, 2014 Edit: 2012 bottle was considerably more enjoyable. Not as bitter in the aftertaste as 2009 vintage.
2009 vintage opened New Year’s Eve 2012. I opened this bottle with an open mind thinking I might actually like it. It was fine except for the bitter finish. That killed it for me and turned me off to it. I poured the balance of the bottle down the sink. I have the new 2012 vintage now in the cellar aging. Hopefully it will be an improvement from the 2009.
At the Barleywine event. Vintage 2008. Aroma is oak, slight caramel, toffee, sweet. Appearance is amber, light tan head, clear. Taste is caramel, toffee, booze, barrel, good. Mouthfeel is medium body, light carbonation, caramel barrel aftertaste. Overall, it’s good BiddleBrau (1238) - Fort Washington, Pennsylvania, USA - NOV 18, 2016
2007 vintage. Clear brown limited head. Big malty and alcoholic nose. Alcohol is very evident up front, malt is not quite so viscous and hops provide some balance. Barley wines seem to have fallen out of prominence but its still a welcome treat, especially something like this. It is improving as it warms. JDBaker11058 (2351) - Maryland, USA - APR 12, 2016
appearance: slightly murky, reddish copper, one finger of creamy tan head shrinking to a thin collar. aroma: treacle, vanilla, coffee, molasses, toasted wood. taste: sweet, with caramel, toffee, brown sugar, raisin, wood, and a hint of bourbon. finish: very smooth, lingering sweetness, a subtle slow heat building. notes: Very good barleywine; malt heavy of course, and doesn’t have a lot of the very strong hopping that some US versions seem to employ. Enjoyable. 2012 Vintage courtesy of Zoltan.

Bottle. Clear amber pour, thin beige head. Aroma is quite fruity, caramel, tropical, plum, ripe fruits and some sugar. Flavor is sweet, heavy malts, nice spicy bitterness and smooth vanilla oak. Lovely balance, heavy brew. koleminer20 (3978) - Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA - MAY 26, 2015
Enjoyed at an all barley wine tasting at Travis’s house on February 21. The pour was a ruby-brown gem (haha) with a nice small egg shell colored head. The aroma is heavy on caramel with a little woodiness and a bit of dark fruit. It’s pretty plain. The flavor mimics it. The malts and barrel kind of fight over a dominating flavor with the fruits taking a back seat. The mouth feel is a little thin and oily with a sporadic carbonation that I think might be a bit too forceful. The aftertaste is lightly bitter with a touch of vanilla. It’s not bad by any means, but this one could be a lot better arminjewell (9720) - East Lansing, Michigan, USA - APR 12, 2015
Pour out of 750 mL bottle, dark brownish red pour with khaki colored head, aroma brought notes of dark fruit, caramel, oak, and vanilla into some brown sugar, touch of dark fruit into a bit of earthy notes into a bit of yeast. Taste was a nice mix of grass, bread and toast into caramel, vanilla, oak with some dark fruit, finishing sweet. mixmasterob (1060) - Atlanta, Georgia, USA - MAR 29, 2015
2013 bottle from Bruisin. Deep mahogany pour with a small off white head. Aroma was sweet caramel malts, vanilla, touch of oak, candied fig. Flavors were in line with lots of caramel, bittersweet fruits, more vanilla and an oaky finish. Plus mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. Slightly bitter woody finish, more vanilla. Really tasty Barleywine. Man I love this style.
