Pour out of 750 mL bottle, dark brownish pour with off white head, aroma brought notes of dark fruit, caramelized sugars, toffee into a bit of bread, some toast into a bit of spice, rye, slight hint of lemon peel. Taste was a mix of caramel, toffee, dark fruit into some earthy, spicy notes with a hint of rye, bread, touch of grass, finishing sweet, slightly spicy. Bottle shared at Zwanze Day 2012, sent to me by jcnielsen. Thanks Justin! Pours a bit hazy, reddish brown appearance with a light brown head. A bit spicy, bready, light rye, herbal, somewhat earthy aroma. Easy drinking, somewhat spicy grainy, toasty, light caramel, chocolate flavor. Pretty tasty. Tasted from tall bottle into tulip glass. Poured a clear, dark reddish-brown color with big beige foam which quickly subsided leaving a thin ring of bubbles and some nice Belgian lace. Swirling the glass revived a full head each time. Very pleasant aromas of malted barley, crisp rye, caramel, fruitcake, toffee, and faint refined hops. Flavors of burnt brown sugar (kettle caramelization?), almost syrupy malt sweetness, balanced by a cool tart/tangy hops flavor, slightly spicy rye, apricot, raisins, black cherries. Moderate carbonation, full mouthfeel, well-hidden but warming alcohol, long-lasting fruity and bittersweet aftertaste. I was excited about this local special-release collaboration, and I must say it’s one of my favorite Schlafly brews ever. Delicious. Get it while you can! gregwilsonstl (2575) - St. Louis, Missouri, USA - JAN 8, 2012
Beautiful Mahogany. Minimal white head. This is very true to the bock description in BJCP beer style guide. Narnad (1521) - Crystal Lake, Illinois, USA - JAN 6, 2012
Picked up a bottle at the Schlafly Tap Room. Pours a deep brown color with some mild red notes. The head is a large white/off-white color that quickly fades down to nothing in the glass. Aroma is very pungent. A deep malty presence but not sweet nor grainy, very unique. Light toasted notes but a hefty rye bread type of nose. Hops does come through lending a light grassy presence. Some light allspice type of spiciness comes through as well. Flavor is fantastic! A great toasted maltiness greets you on the first sip. Very light chocolate and caramel sweetness in the middle and a fantastic sharp rye spiciness to compliment and finish the beer. Body has is hefty with a slight oily feel but the fine sharp carbonation provides a terrific mouthfeel. Overall a very good beer. The rye really works in the bock styling and they did a great job on making a solid bock base for this beer. Might have a to get a few more of these for the future. michael-pollack (4959) - King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA - NOV 3, 2011
750ml Bottle: Got in trade from phaleslu; THANKS Peter! Aroma of malt, cocoa, toasting, light caramel, light toffee, slight rye, and brown sugar. Poured deep amber in color with a small, tan head that mostly disappeared but lasted throughout as a film on top of the beer, as well as around the edges. Clear. Lightly sparkling. Flavor is lightly sweet. Tastes of malt, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, toasting, and a hint of rye. Medium body. Smooth, then lightly dry texture. Average carbonation. Malt, light caramel, light toffee, light brown sugar, toasting finish is light to medium sweet and dry. 7%ABV is completely hidden throughout. kwoeltje (2233) - Manchester, Missouri, USA - OCT 29, 2011
