Bottled, from Landbierparadies, Nuremberg. Clear deep amber, creamy head. Fruity, bready nose. Mid sweet with medium body and well rounded head. Some caramel, lots of bread and grass. Mid bitter finish. TAR (2787) - Blue Ridge Mountains, North Carolina, USA - MAY 8, 2014
Bottle consumed on Nov. 2012, best by Mar. 2013: Brownish with golden hues. Creamy halo surrounds a broken cap of foam. Pleasant aromas of browned biscuit (Munich), black pepper, licorice hoppiness, slightly burnt toffee and spruce tips. Mild fruitiness, also. Soft and snug carbonation. Thinnish body. Waxy character combines with a distant fruitiness and browned biscuit edge. Unchecked fruitcake and candied cassis obscure the richer malt textures and deter them from latching onto the tongue, thus rendering the body thinner than desired. Some toasty malt and caramelized sweetness would help. Nice and polished spruce and wood-root-spice hoppiness fills in the center, as does a splash of ripe plum juiciness. Fruity finish features an edge of plum along with a fleeting tandem of fallen leaves and breadcrust. A decent and mostly clean example, if a bit ordinary overall, quiet in the nose and lacking malt depth. Maybe a tad on the fruity side of the spectrum, too. I’m thinking a visit to this brewery is in order since it appears that very few people have reviewed anything fresh from the source, and we all know how Franconian bottles tend to be such a crapshoot, even when super fresh.
