3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Clear dark golden pour with a few yellowish bubbles for a head. Aroma of malts, caramel, toffee and apricot. Taste of syrupy malts, caramel, apricot, and a hint of green apple hiding behind all the sweetness. Medium carbonation and a heavy creamy mouthfeel. Really enjoyed this.
This is it - the Holy Grail. Helles is the greatest beer I've ever drank. I was able to pick up a 4-pack for $20 at a respectable liquor store several times over the years. One 12 oz. bottle is an absolute knockout of a beer. It's almost wrong to call it a beer - at 14% ABV it's more like an extra-drinkable liquor. It's been too long since I've had one to recall all the luxurious details; just know that everything about this brew is perfection. It will leave you warm inside and fill your palate with an indelible joy you'll be hard-pressed to find elsewhere. If you've never had one and you're lucky enough to come across it, make sure you secure a few bottles and I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. colui72 (1098) - HONG KONG - OCT 2, 2017
Not the classic Samichlaus but the Helles, still brewed only once a year (on Dec 6). Pours hazy copper, no carbonation, minimal head vanished after 1 minute and no lacing. Very sweet aroma, sweet malts, and lots of sweet winey notes (Marsala and Sherry). Very sweet taste as well, toffee, sweet malts, sweet wines, booze. Very strong, enjoyable as a "dessert wine". Quite thin bodied, flat carbonation and forever sweet. Good beer. GregMooreNH (109) - Bedford, New Hampshire, USA - SEP 18, 2017
UPDATED: NOV 4, 2017 Pours golden ruby with a thin head that quickly vanishes without a hint of lacing. Aroma is sweet prunes with a hint of booziness that lies beneath. Taste is raisins, clove and honey. Aftertaste is minimal with a slight burn. A good beer, but to carry the Samichlaus name, I expected more. Icedwarf (1804) - Etten-Leur, NETHERLANDS - SEP 10, 2017
Lichtbruin bier zonder schuim. Smaak is warm, krachtig en zoet met iets van cognac, rozijnen en zoet fruit. Mist net iets te veel smaak nuances om echt een topper te zijn. Idiosynkrasie (7966) - Bielefeld, GERMANY - SEP 9, 2017
330ml bottle. Clear, amber colour with late awakening, small, frothy, fading, white head. Toffee malty aroma, hints of marzipan, dried fruit, raisin, maraschino cherry, Marsala, sherry. Taste is sweet, malty, fruity, sweet vinous, notes of Marsala, sherry, a touch of treacle; oily texture, minimally sticky palate. Intensely sweet but not cloying - could do well as desert wine substitute.

Clear copper color with little/no head. Incredibly sweet and malty, almost syrupy smelling, like a liquid extract you use to make other beer from. Caramel, butterscotch, wildflowers. Thick and rich, super sweet, sticky candy like orange gummy candy filled with Brandy, warming. Interesting to see the expiration date of 30 June 2021, I'll have to get a few more and stash them for a few years. nutjes (1243) - Zwevegem, BELGIUM - AUG 21, 2017
33cl-fles van bij Dranken de Caigny te Essen. U: Helder donkeramber met dunne witte schuimkraag die bijna meteen wegebt. G: Esdoornsiroop, alcohol, karamel, noten en gedroogd fruit. Ruikt zeer zoet. S: Zoet. Karamel, nootachtig, esdoornsiroop en vijgen. Veel alcoholwarmte. Dit is wat eentonig zoet. M: Medium volmondig, plakkerig en weinig carbonatie. brigg (708) - New York, USA - JUL 25, 2017

Bottle from my secret santa ’15, Saeglopur, many thanks! Pours a clear dark golden with vrtually no head. Sweet, malty and sticky, with honey, raisins, plums, toffee and nutty and sherry notes. Quite boozy. davedrinkinbeer (25) - Indianapolis, Indiana, USA - JUN 10, 2017
Beer has a malt/syrup scent to it. Beer tastes just like it smells, syrup, caramel, malt. It is also lightly carbonated and feels heavy. Even though it is 14% ABV, only a trace of alcohol is detected. Very sweet, and stretches the definition of beer, feels more like a Liqueur. The sweet taste is likeable, and for being this heavy is very drinkable-- so if you like it, the 14% content will reward you after a couple of these....
