The once strongest beer in the world is back ! Brewed only once a year on December 6. Samichlaus is aged for 10 months before bottling. This beer is perhaps the rarest in the world. Samichlaus may be aged for many years to come. Older vintages become more complex with a creamy warming finish. Serve with hardy robust dishes and desserts, particulary with chocolates, or as an after dinner drink by itself. Brewed under the exclusive licence of Feldschlsschen-Hrlimann-Holding, Switzerland.

Nice clear ruby and violet coloured body with a thinnish, single centimetre tall tan head that fades fast, but leaves the very nice ruby and purple glow as the only thing to look at. Aroma of alcohol, pit fruits, toasted malt, raisins, figs, earth and way more alcohol - pungent. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong rich malt flavours show up first with a big toast flavour, then breaking immediately into a large alcohol bite with medicinal and deep tastes and some pit fruit sweetness that shows raisins, figs and plums, but the syrupy body lends some complexity to a touch of hops as well. Aftertaste shows the alcohol, toast, grain, earth and especially the pit fruits and syrupy sweetness that still comes through after all that alcohol. Overall, a super pungent beer with a lot of depth and complexities and a syrupy finish that shows remarkably well despite the high alcohol content. I sampled this this 33 cL bottle purchased by one of my hockey teammates and sampled on 23-February-2017 (Bottled in 2015)- Thanks Alex!

Pours a dark amber with no real head to speak of. Heavy malt and caramel aroma. Taste is sweet with more sweet. Brown sugar, caramel maybe some dark fruit and a good helping of booze. Overall this is a pretty hardcore beer, sweet boozyness not for the light beer drinkers.

Bottle from martin00sr, opened to celebrate my birthday. Pours clear copper brown with airy beige head. Clear aroma of caramel, malt and yeast, with notes of fruit and touches of hops. Sweet flavour of brown sugar, malt, caramel and fruit, with heavy boozy notes and touches of yeast. Bitter, boozy aftertaste with sugary notes. Well, Bamsen goes boozy today! Yee-haw!

Clear bubbly brown with minimal tan head. Nice aroma, raisins, dates, brown sugar, caramel. Full body. Sticky syrupy mouthfeel. Some booze but not too intrusive. Flavor is sweet. Dark fruits, caramel, chocolate, root beer, vanilla. Reasonable balance. Perhaps a tad better at a cooler temperature, hides some of the excess sweetness present as it approaches room temperature. Long finish. Quite good.

Bottle. Brewed Dec 2006; Bottled 2007; BBE date July 2012; Drank Aug 2009. Deep Gold/Copper in colour. Very, Very Malty; very caramel, very toffee, candy sugar, maple syrup, molasses, honey. Fruity; raisins, dried fruit. Hoppy; some hops, but little bitterness. Spicy. Syrupy; Vinous, rather port-like in mouthfeel. Very smooth. Very sugar-sweet malty throughout. A veritable sugar-bomb. But a Classic Beer! (2009-08)

Clear deep nutty color with a head that vanish a bit to fast. Not even a layer in the end. It was also a bit to cold at start. So the aroma was not that inviting either. And my first try with this one many years ago was a complete disaster. I gave it 1.1 here.. Felt I had to give it a new chance. And the start did not give me much hope for a better rating. Ok this one is sweet, but still quite balanced and nice. Smooth in a way. Also a bit oily texture. The carbonation level was actually quite nice for this beer. Toffee, dried fruits, some banana and some spices in the flavor. WoW what a nice evening sipper. The temperature did really matter here. And it fits best alone. Quite well masked alcohol. warming and fine.

330ml bottle from Beers Of Europe (2014 vintage):
Quite a strong beer with a full body & a very sweet mouthfeel, it opened up as a fairly balanced offering but gradually things got sweeter & it eventually began to overpower towards the end, almost seeming sickening but not quite. Some nice malts featured alongside some decent caramel flavours with plenty ripe fruits as well which is what I expected but it was just a touch too strong at times. The beer had good carbonation levels though & by the end it was also quite boozy with a pretty warming feel & solid kick to it. Overall it was a very nice beer but due to the strength its probably more likely to be a one-off for me rather than something Id go back to often, if at all.
