Illini08's rating

3.5
Illini08 (542) - Raleigh, North Carolina, USA - JUN 13, 2008
500 mL bottle had in Vienna on 6/3. Darker brown color of any other dunkel I had while in Europe. Nutty, roasty aroma. Flavor was nutty and caramel. Lightly dry finish. Carbonation was lively on the tongue but not overdone. Definitely the best dunkel I had while in Europe and one that I wouldn’t mind drinking again.

Bottle, 0.5l. Clear deep ruby pour with one finger off-white head. Soapy looking, regular retention and lacing. Malts on the nose, a bit grainy. Slight caramel. Some roastiness. Thin to medium body, medium carbonation. Average texture, perhaps a bit thicker. Malty sweet taste with mild bitterness later on. Aroma is mostly malty, sweet caramel and toffee. Slightly roasted, bready. Developing into mild hop bitterness paired with some metal acidity. Herbal aftertaste, short finish. Overall, a bit bland but easily drinkable. Average.

explosivedog (1107) - Auckland, NEW ZEALAND - AUG 26, 2016
500ml bottle. Pours translucent black with little head. Aroma is chocolate, vinegar and a little of the savoury cheese notes that I usually dislike of the style. Flavour is savoury caramel with almost some Cola fruitiness and a clean finish. Essentially ordered in panic at a restaurant, and it’s not a style I’m fond of, but much better than it could have been.

midovark (889) - Balassagyarmat, HUNGARY - AUG 23, 2016
0.5 l bottle. Pours full black color and no head. Slight aromas of chocolate, roasted malts, some coffee and sweet malts with metallic notes. Sweet chocolate, earthy notes and some other sweet taste at the end of the nip that i cant identify. Nice dunkel.

Klare dunkel orange braune Farbe, mittelgroße beige schaumkrone. Geruch dezent süß malzig, karamellig, würzig hopfig. Geschmack süß leicht röstmalzig, nussig, Karamell, leicht metallisch hopfig.

Bottle: Reddish brown/amber color, creamy brownish head. Malty, carmalic, sweetish and light roasty aroma. Flavor is sweetish, malty, caramelic. Light cacao and roasted malt notes. Ok but too sweetish for me.

Seems that this isn’t retired anymore. Bought a bottle a few days ago in a supermarket in Vorchdorf, near the brewery. Dark red to brown, clear body, with a big, frothy, beige head, that isn’t very stable. Aroma of roasted malt, caramel, nuts, red and dark berries and also some metallic notes. Taste with about the same aromas, but sweeter, with the fruity and caramel notes more present and with metallic notes again. Mouthfeel is medium, slick, with a low carbonation and it finishes sweet and slightly roasty-bitter. Firstly, the metallic notes aren’t really pleasant, but at least they disappear more and more the more this beer warms up. Otherwise this is an average Dunkel, that isn’t bad, but, as many other beers of this style, too sweet for my liking. Overall decent, but not as good as I expected.

Drunk from bottle in Schloetgen, Austria. Very dark and quite sweet beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Nothing special of note here. Bland dark beer, with a little caramel roast on it. Pretty thin on the mouth, and little to no head. The comment regarding the "floaty white particulate" was disheartening, and was wondering if the addition was intentional. Would expect, if this was bottle conditioned, it’d have more of a kick, but it came off as boring. (Bottle Pour 4/25/2008)

Bottled(500ml). -Dark brown coloured, medium sized tan head, dusty caramelish nose. Light roasted malt and mild chocolate taste with nutty and toffee notes. Also nutty finish. Just average dunkel, and to be honest I’ve expected more. Hm...first rate from Europe...
