2.7 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
UPDATED: MAR 18, 2011 Schlussel is an "ok" altbier, but despite being very drinkable, there is nothing very hoppy to speak of and not really malty either, It lacks a little something that would make you say "I want another one right now", just like the Uerige Alt is, for example. The place is beautiful though, definitly worths a stop if you’re near Dusseldorf (along with all the other Altbier breweries!)
On tap @ Schlussel Düsselfdorf. ramato, carico, leggermente velata, schiuma beige chiara, fine e persistente.
Bottle from Trinkgut, Münster, Northrhine Westphalia, Germany. Pours hazelnut with a creamy head. Aroma has caramel, roasted malts, biscuit and fruits. Taste is fruity malty, slight sourish, earthy with lovely caramel. Caramelly-sweet, slight roasty finish!

Pours clear, darker amber, caramelly. Good white head, very fluffy and resistant. Smell is crisp, mild grassy hops. Aromatic maltyness. Taste is full, bit sweet, some caramel, no real bitterness. Mild hoppy aroma. Very gentle, creamy body with low carbonation Piepenhenrich (1198) - Steinbach, GERMANY - AUG 26, 2017
Being brought up on Altbier I cannot be regarded as 100% objective, but among all "Alt", Schlüssel is my favorite. It has a more fruity taste compared to others, so it makes a good final of a beer tour in the old city of Düsseldorf. Best, of course, on tap in the brewery’s outlet. tonyferrari (33) - North Rhine-Westphalia, GERMANY - AUG 12, 2017
Served on tap. Clear bronze colour. Thick long-lasting off-white foam. Light herbal aroma and a slightly malty aroma. The malty flavour and a light roasty flavour well balanced by the bitterness. Medium carbonation. The medium body and the 5.0% Abv add complexity to the beer.

500ml flip-top bottle (thanks Karmo). Clear dark chestnut color. Huge size, thick tan head, stays. Sweet, malty, caramel, creamy in taste. Husky, chestnut, buttery, sweet, malty in taste. Herbal hops and slightly buttery in aftertaste. Dusty and dry mouthfeel. Soft bitterness. Shy and pleasant. Very solid brew. tanobicho (23) - Düsseldorf, North Rhine-Westphalia, GERMANY - JUL 27, 2017
0.5 lt bottle in Düsseldorf.
Clear copper beer, creamy white head with nice retention and lacing.
Malts, toffee, caramel, warm dough aroma.
In taste hints of roasted malts and caramel, perfect balance between sweet and bitter. Correct carbonation, soft. Ending barely tends towards bitter, very drinkable, one of the best alts in town. Undoubtedly at its best from tap at Zum Schlüssel Brewery. gegwilson (3788) - North Yorkshire, ENGLAND - JUN 6, 2017
Keg in Holy Craft, Dusseldorf. Brown with a frothy cream head. Toffee and malt aroma. The taste is malty with lots of toast and some metallic notes. Decent. Mister_Li (1536) - GERMANY - MAY 25, 2017
