Originally developed in the late 1700’s, British breweries would send beer via sail to the troops and British expatriates in India. With a whopping hop aroma and finish, married to dry but full maltiness this ale will remind you of those traditional ales. The copper color, East Kent Golding’s hops and moderate carbonation add to its authenticity as a English IPA.

My 1st Schmohz beer and what a disappointment. This fizzy, sweet, and fruity brew is an IPA in name only. They didn’t bring any hops to the game and what they did bring should have been left at home. With all the great brewers in Michigan (especially Grand Rapids) it seems strange that someone would bother bottling this stuff.

Bottle at home. Pours a slightly hazy golden amber. Nose is some caramel, citrus and maltiness. Flavor follows and is a bitter malt with some citrus. This was better than I expected. Not great, but definitely drinkable.

Schmohz seems to have been around for a while but all their beers basically taste like some homebrewer’s first batch. This one gushes and then pours cloudy w/ a huge rocky head. This and the first whiff being somewhat Styrofoamy, are a dead on hint there is some sort of wild yeast infection. Taste is at least fairly dry and bitter, which is what you want in an IPA. Unfortunately what bitterness there is is unpleasant and soapy. To be honest, I could go on a bit about how this tastes but if telling you it smells like Styrofoam and tastes like soap doesn’t get my point across, I don’t know what will. I guess you can look at the score I gave it.

bottle. Amber with small head. Medium malt body. Overcarbonated. Dull hops. Metal. I can almost hear my tastebuds screaming in agony.

Aroma is sweet and citrus, not a ton to the flavor... just nothing special. Hard to believe this place is open with the competition in the area making such a better quality product

IPA? WTF. Opened beer, foamed all over my fkin counter top and sink. Took a sip, carbonation burn malt sweetness. Hops? Nope, just the same malty shit they put out. Never again.

chucklemation (1764) - Royal Oak, Michigan, USA - NOV 24, 2013
Cloudy amber color. Has a sweet honey aroma. Taste is dry and finish is bitter. Lacks the sweetness of the smell, but this does give it it’s own distinct character. Ok beer.

Bready, roasty malt, with floral and citrus-tasting hops. Color and liquid is a thick, cloudy golden one, almost like a light apple-cider. The head is extremely frothy, pour with great care, takes a while to settle as well. The taste is more medium bitter than anything else. Body is light to medium, with an oily, somewhat sticky texture. Carbonation is a bit above average, with a longer, bitter finish.

12oz bottle. Poured a deeper golden color with a white head. Some citrus and caramel.

Rated in 2010 (Backlog) - Gold in color with an average sized off-white head. Aroma is of hops, malt, caramel, and grain. Taste is of hops, grain and malt.

Overall this was a very enjoyable beer but I have had much better IPA’s. I would put this one at slightly above the middle of the pack.
