Rich deep dark brown coloured body with a thinnish, fast-dying tan head, about two centimetres tall, almost light brown, with a nice opaque glow to the beer. Aroma of roasted malt, cacao (dark, ~80%), canella and a dose of deep pitted fruits, along with some alcohol. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong rich chocolate and roasted malt flavours with a good dose of vanilla, alcohol, toffee, spice and a nice finish of alcohol, cacao and a touch of coffee. Aftertaste shows some roasted malt, along with coffee, earth, vanilla, oak and some light spices - very nice and robust. Overall, a much better beer than I was expecting (I’ve had others from the brewery) with a good flavour complete with spices and depth and a nice complexity that is good for the season and a welcome break from a ’plain’ imperial stout or herbed beer. 12 ounce bottle into snifter, no bottle dating. Pours nearly opaque dark brown color with a 2-3 finger dense and rocky khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a large cap that lasts. Dense soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted brown bread, chocolate, cocoa, and coffee; with lighter notes of molasses, nuttiness, raisin, plum, apple, herbal, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt and light fruity yeast/earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted brown bread, chocolate, cocoa, and coffee; with lighter notes of molasses, nuttiness, raisin, plum, apple, herbal, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Light herbal hop and roast bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted brown bread, chocolate, cocoa, coffee, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light dryness from bitterness/carbonation, lightly increasing through the glass. Medium-high carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready, and lightly sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden, with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is nice old ale style. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to drink for the big ABV. Feels a bit too roasty for an Old ale; but is not to the point where it would feel like a stout. Bottle from Ann Arbor. Picked up because I wanted an old ale. Dark brown pour with a huge brown head that lasts forever with lots of lacing. Has the slightly tart and malty aroma of an old ale. Bottle showing ABV of 9.2%. Pours a very dark brown. Creamy looking long lasting tan head. Mild roasty aroma. Flavor of dark fruits and caramel. Very smooth and creamy. Bottle: The aroma consists of chocolate, molasses, coffee, roast, and a touch of smoke. It pours a dark brown with some orange highlights around the edges of the glass. It has a small beige head that quickly fades to a soapy ring. There’s is some dotted lacing left on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with chocolate and molasses. There is some fruitiness in the middle. The finish has light-moderate anise, roasted coffee, citrus hops, and a touch of alcohol. It’s medium-full bodied with mild carbonation. Overall, it really seems like more of an Imperial Stout than an Old Ale. Regardless of what style it is, it’s pretty tasty.
