draft. medium-dark brown with a salt and pepper fine-bubbled head. phenols are a bit too strong and seem to cover the aroma hops, while strong roast and black patent use gives it a harsh soy sauce and smoked plastic note. body is somewhat fizzy and the yeast phenols contribute a considerably dirty black pepper and cheesecloth flavor that masks the hops and turns the black patent slightly sour. Draft at Brouwer’s. Near-black with coppery red highlights, small beige head. Aroma of citrus, particularly grapefruit, floral, herbal notes with some biscuity aroma in the back. The "black" aspect of this is more noticable upon sipping, though the maltiness is more biscuity with a plain popcorn sort of flavor. This has a lovely amarillo hop flavor, finishes citrusy, floral, and herbal with a piney bitter bite on the finish. Damn tasty. riversideAK (6261) - Shoreline, Washington, USA - NOV 13, 2010
Really nice roasted malt and floral/citrus hop nose. Pours dark brown with a tannish head and lace. Dark roasted malts, some citrus and a nice bitter floral finish. Balanced and super drinkable. Schooner is kicking ass with these black pales/ipas. Nalu (217) - Washington, USA - NOV 7, 2010
UPDATED: NOV 9, 2010 Tap @ SE. Clear dark red-brown pour with a brief tan head which leaves a moderate, coarse lace. Very similar to the Puget Soundian Dark IPA, but with more body and slightly more balanced taste, aka a hair sweeter. Fresh hop nose, dark-roasted malt medium body. Balanced middle and dry finish with coffee, walnut and toasted almond notes. Citrus and pine hops from the nose through the finish.
