The porter is a good beer with a dark brown color. On draft, this beer pours nice with a decent head and pretty good aroma. It is not one of my favorites that they have, as the malt flavor does not match the stout and the hoppiness is better in the red. I’m thinking they should have stuck with the original name. "Midnight", I guess, in the right light. From the angle that I’m looking at it right now: well, let’s just say you can see the high-end caramel malts’ reddish contribution to the color, making me agree slightly with the brewer’s "deep ruby red" description. It looks thin, with a fine, foamy medium brown head and nice retention. The nose is soft, predominantly of vanilla and roasted malts. It smells traditional. In the mouth, you can tell that some heavily charred malts are present, and seem well-balanced with the expected chocolate and roasted characteristics (chocolate seeming more dominant). It’s not as thin in the mouth as it looks, is creamier than I expected, which hands the chocolate and roasted/toasted malts over to a finish of bitterness - harsh, at times. It finishes well for the most part, but I just can’t get over how full and creamy this is. I normally complain about how thin some porters are and wish they had more body (without venturing into stout territory), but now that I get a porter with the body I want I realize how less likely I am, as the brewer explains the style, to drink it "at any time of day". It seems a little too much like a sweet stout to me, yet still has a thinness to it that would make me question its stoutiness. As the beer became warmer the aroma and up front taste became better. The after taste is a little acidic with a smoke flavor. Other tastes include molasses, cola, and chemicals.

Draft from Coalhouse Pizza in Stamford, CT. Classic and solid porter to be proud of. Smooth and silky, but not too intense in its body. Hop character with hints of cigar, chocolate.

It pours pitch black and gives the same color body. The head is pretty small and leaves within a couple seconds. The lacing is spotty but gives a bit of a smeared look as it runs down the glass. The smell is malty along with some burnt coffee. The taste is the same maltiness along with the burnt coffee, and it gives a slight bitter taste as well. Draft @ brewpub in Portland, ME. Deep brown with a nice tan head that coated the glass with lace. Light roasted malt and barley nose. The taste is slightly above average. From the 12 fluid ounce bottle stamped 12/26/11. It pours chestnut brown with feint reddish hues, but mainly brown, along with a moderate, short-lived tan head. The aroma is full of dark malts and little in the way of hops, the way a traditional Porter should be in my opinion. The body is full and satisfying. The taste begins roasty and ends moderately bitter with a lingering effect. I liked it.
