The Dark Wheat Project- a joint group effort. We invited 20 craft beer lovers to brew with us for a cause: the American Lung Association’s Trek Across Maine. Our guest brewers helped us carefully blend several varieties of dark specialty wheat malts with barley. At 7.5% Alc. by Vol., this black creation is an uncommon version of the traditional wheat beer. Thank you to our generous guest brewers for their labor and enthusiasm to make Dark Wheat Project and the Trek a success.

LiteWait (266) - New Hampshire, USA - APR 17, 2011
Poured from a 22 oz. Dark brown with ruby red around the edges. No Head or lacing. Aroma is of malt and wheat. Light-medium carbonation and medium bodied. Flavor is roasted coffee and roasted malt and a light touch of alcohol in the finish and with some earthy bitterness. Overall is good. Not one I would run right out and purchase again. $8.99 for a 22oz bottle from Smiley’s Discount Beverage Dover, NH

Bomber thanks to Arbitrator. Pours a clear dark cola brown color with a small fading tan head. Nice aroma of caramel and roast, wheat, and some dark fruit notes. Very good flavor, huge caramel and toffee with plum, raisin, roastiness, and slight booze. Medium-bodied with soft carbonation and a rather smooth mouthfeel. Pretty good stuff overall. Great for a dunkelweizen.

Same bottle as in photo. Pored into a Weizen glass. Nearly pitch black color. A brown hue around the edges; very minimal head. It did leave spotty lacing. Nose is sweet roasted malt The taste is not like a dunkleweizen, its more of a porter. No banana clove, bubblegum or wheat/ yeast at all. Dark fruit, roasted malt and a light touch of alcohol in the finish. A good brew, just not your traditional Dunkleweizen.

BuckeyeBoy (8301) - Boise, Idaho, USA - SEP 16, 2010
On tap at Sebago Portland , ME location. Pours out dark brown with some red highlights topped with a small sand head. Aroma was of sweet pit fruit, rich malts, nuts, and wheat. Taste was more of the sweetness. A nice light molasses note along with a nice full body.

MiP (15962) - Sønderborg, DENMARK - SEP 11, 2010
Draught at the brewpub. Almost black colour, seems cloudy. Small stable light brown head. Very roasted flavour, vinous. Seems to have a little burning aftertaste, almost like chili or hopburn. Still balanced, though.

TURDFERGUSON (4058) - Durham, North Carolina, USA - AUG 29, 2010
Bottle bought at RSVP Liquors in Portland. Pours dark amber with a small beige-ish head. Nose of molasses, light bready sweetness, and meh. Flavor is bready, molasses, meh. FInishes meh. Very muddled and nothing really stands out--at all.

(Rating #3187)

A friend at work hooked me up with some sebago beers and this one is delicious! It’s like a wheaty porter with dark malts up front and almost a chocolate porter-like finish. Alcohol is well hidden. Coffee tones abound in this well balanced beer which has a nice sweet molasses layer underneath. The only down side for me is the palate seems a bit too wet which kind of waters down the goodness in this beer. There is also a bit of an ashy flavor in the finish.
