Paid $12ish... Enjoyed from my HotD goblet... 1" lite tan head dies back a little fast, but leaves a perfect cap and decent drapes of lacing... the brew is polished amber.
Let this brew warm up and you get the full spectrum... much better than I was expecting for an "American quad".
The nose is a fairly complex malty monster without ever smelling "sweet"... dark toast/bread... caramel and an abundant dark fruity ester component.. hints of raisin with more plum/fermented out sweet cherry essence... no real phenolic presence, but that is not a complaint, this smells great.
The flavor is nicely balanced... great malt complexities and fruity esters.. malty without ever verging on sweet... tastes more like a Trappist BSDA than a continental/abbey version... just enough perceived hoppy bitterness to really balance this out... a bit of EtOH, but not a deal breaker.
Body is medium-lite with a good carbonation, could maybe use more bubble IMO.
Overall, I am pretty damn surprised.. This doesn’t have all the complexities of it’s continental brothers, but it is very well done. I am impressed and will certainly buy again.
bottle. dark amber red brown(yeah i know 3 colors but fuck you for judging me ) body with a grey hued white head that gets thin and stays there. aroma is rogh, strong alcohol and solvent with berries! smells like mentos and breath mints. its hot. it works well with food somehow, but it is hot. flavors of alcohol, obviously, caramel, light peanut butter. hops are subdued b ythe aggressive alcohol and malt forward body. Fuck the Mets. i mean Fuck them in the most vulgar way. Keg at Whole Foods Charlottesville. Pours a clear dark amber with a thin creamy tan head. Decent head retention. Aroma of bready malt, caramel, earthy and medicinal notes. The taste is toffee, cotton candy, caramel, stone fruits, bitter hops. Medium bodied, low carbonation, mild lingering bitterness.

Poured this into my large (50cl) Leffe goblet. Medium brown, shades of orange with silky beige head. Aroma is dried fruit, some wine esters, raisins, getting richer as it warms. taste is more of the same, sweet with faint alcohol burn. This is true to the style and very authentic. Nice to see the Americans refining this style without adding any extra ingredients. Well done.
