Saint Stephen is our take on the classic Belgian saison and like the historical style, Saint Stephen will change from year to year. Traditionally brewed in the winter months for drinking during the heat of summer, we see these light, effervescent ales with their soft spice notes and subtle fruity aromas as an appealing and ever changing alternative to the typical domestic session beer.

This "saison" had a very strong, tinny, American style, added on Belgian yeast flavor. I like saisons that are somewhat delicate, complex, and contain finesse.

22oz in Seattle. Fruity, rich alc aroma, banana-esther. High alc sweet notes. Rich, clear gold, small head. Strong saison. Some bitter yeast. Nice enough.

Bottle from Boise Co-op. Medium gold pour with airy head. Grains dominate the aroma, followed quickly by the yeast and some grassy notes. Taste right on target, bready, grassy, coriander. Nice slippery body, slick. This one gets better with each sip.

Bottle picked up at the COOP... Poured into my small Teku... slightly hazed orange brew with a pillowy white head that dies back pretty fast... phenolic forward nose with some background orange essence and lesser apricot.. pepper and clove move slowly across the palate, light pale malt with hints of dry toast help bloom a slight fruity essence that reminds me of pears.. Pretty proper saison... Very well done.. Good bubble and light body.. Even for a nearly 8% saison, this drinks nicely.

Tap, medium amber beer, little head. Aroma is malt and pineapple. Taste is honey, pineapple, malt, a little citrus. Palate is super rich for a saison, carbonation subdued. This is a bit sweet for a saison, and thick. Drinks more like an amber. Not rating this quite as high as I might for being a bit out of style?

(Draught) Pours a clear yellow body with a medium white head. Aroma of nuts, toasted grain, grass, pepper, and florals. Flavor of grass, nuts, herbs, some dark dried fruit, and pepper.

nealblind (1976) - Seattle, Alabama, USA - AUG 28, 2014
red amber pour big tan head that lasts. Aroma of apples, straw, ginger, dust. Tastes tang, rye, spice, big yeast, some pepper, some plums, bread. Half dubbel/half saison stuff. Sorta dry finish, but way too thick and sweet. Also pretty flat carb.

Draft - Lots of banana and a bit of hay. Clear gold with a decent white head. Lots of banana and fruity esters. This beer is all yeast and none of the Saison flavors I expect.

Draught. Pours a slightly hazy dark golden color with a small white head on it. Nose is slightly floral, with some slight banana coming off it. Taste is slightly sweet with a lot of floral elements to it. Feels just a tad heavy to me to be a great summer drinker.

beernovice39 (3269) - Idaho, USA - NOV 11, 2013
