Fourth bottle out of a six-pack procured in Vermont, decided to make it my first taste of beer after mowing the lawn today. Poured aggressively into the pint glass, a vigorous head similar to Guinness. Aroma of cocoa and toffee, noted both today and upon first bottle I opened earlier in the week. Sweet but toasty, biscuity, reminds me slightly of a shortbread cookie, and I keep going back to chocolate/cocoa flavoring as I taste it. No detectable heat from the alcohol, I agree with the description, great malt depth and drinks like a session beer.

20 oz. draft at The Corner Pug in West Hartford, CT. Very dark amber, white head and good lacing. Smell is roasted malt, caramel, brown sugar and hops. Taste is strong and malty, caramel, dark malt, honey, hops and alcohol. Nice brew! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Where and how somewhere in Vermont
Aroma medium stronger. Malty approach , rather sweet yet clean.
Appearance
Top: off-white creamy mid cap. Nice lace and rings on glass walls.
Base: small haze on amber gold.
Palate : smooth , fairly drinkable , full bodied with lighter carbonation. Average finish.
Taste: low hop profile. Sweet malty vibe , note of caramel.
other notes sweeter straight strong ale with Scottish sugary bend.

My first from this small brewpub after seeing plenty of six packs in my local stores. Clear brown color with head that did not last. Aroma is straight forward malt biscuit. Pretty even sweet and bitter mix. Over all a light body for this stronger ale.

Bottle split at Tony’s house, 19/05/13. Dark amber/chestnut brown with a thin beige head. Nose is dark malts, caramel, hint of biscuit. Taste comprises toffee, malt, bready dough, sugars. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, some bitterness in the finish. A little on the dull side, drinkable none the less.

I poured a 12oz bottle into a goblet. It was bottled on 1/8/13. It cost $2.35 ($0.20 per ounce).

Appearance: Brown with burgundy highlights. Opaque. Forms a small, off-white, foamy head which mostly evaporates but does lace the glass a bit.

Smell: Strong malt aroma plus significant hop presence.

Taste: I didn’t know what to expect out of Shed Mountain Ale. The bottle label describes it as a "rugged brown ale," but the major beer websites classify it as an old ale and others say it’s an English Strong Ale. I could see this beer falling into any of those categories. It has the basic characteristics of each with some noticeably boozy character and a slight astringency.

Up front I get mild maltiness with subtle caramel or toffee flavors. Almost no bitterness to be found, though there is a prominent alcohol presence, which is a bit odd considering the beer isn’t all that big. The finish has more malty flavor than the beginning, with some confectionery sweetness and is reminiscent of a doppelbock. Though the alcohol is there as well is a bit distracting. As the palette stands it’s fine, though I could see more being done with this such as upping the candy flavors or maybe adding some smokiness as well.

Drinkability: For a relatively big beer, Shed Mountain Ale is surprisingly thin and tepid in the mouth. There’s a slight slickness to the texture, though I wouldn’t describe it as oily per se. It goes down smoothly with a bit of warmth from the alcohol. It feels hotter than its 7.4% ABV body should be, but doesn’t have the weight or density of beer that big.

Bottle at a cookout. Amber/brown. Very malty with caramel amd raisins. Fairly easy to drink, though that may just be the comparison to the other usual bbq dreck.

355ml bottle. Dark brownish red, nice colour but also no head. Aroma is not strong, some faint dark malts. Taste is fuller, but not especially strong, some dark malt and molasses sweetness. Drought. Reddish brown with beige foamy head, no specifi aroma I could detect, mellow roasted malt taste, average carbonation, long finish with a hint of coffee in it. Good with chili.
