Cask: Special - J D Wethersppon festival, Autumn 2009.
Tomme Arthur is considered one of the greatest craft brewers in America and has travelled to Shepherd Neame Brewery, Kent, to brew especially for this JDW beer festival. This is a classic example of an American West Coast Extra-Pale Ale, brewed with English barley and no caramel malts, allowing the freshest and brightest hop flavours to really shine through and create a decidedly snappy and dry finish. Hops used: Amarillo, Bramling Cross, Brewers Gold, Phoenix

Clear light-gold beer. Very light hop nose with a trace of pineapple. Dry palate with a soft edge. Decent crisp hops, grassy and spicy. A touch of peach and pineapple at the finish. Bitterish afertaste. Decent hoppy pale ale.

UPDATED: DEC 13, 2009 Cask handpull at Samuel Peto, JDW, Folkestone. Hops jump out of the glass at you. Pure clean gold, thick lasting cream head from the sparkler. Lovely US hop aroma. Some ok pale malts in mouth, then some juicy malt on swallow. Finish has some decent hop. More aromatic than bitter. Decent if not the best APA. Re-rate with no sparkler. Aroma is less as you would expect, bit thin and hard in mouth. 6 3 6 3 14 3.2/5.0 Re-rate at County Hotel, Ashford, much better, the aroma was very good, great American hop aroma, the body was better and overall just a more drinkable beer.

Cask conditioned at a Wetherspoons. Pale gold with white head, beautifully laced. Initial aroma is of fresh barley and hops, leading to a sharp, lemony, grapefruit, floral pale ale. Lovely citrus notes right through to a bitter finish. light and easily drinkable, I really quite enjoyed it.

Cask handpump, The Penny Black, JDW, Bicester, Oxon-18-11-09 Pours warm gold in colour with a white head, there is a hint of haze to this, barmaid really struggled pulling this one through it appeared very, very lively. Nice citrussy hoppy aroma. Taste has a pushy citrus (grapefruit) hoppiness about it with a nice layer of sweet malts to balance things out, brisk and breezy sort of beer, you’re sort of expecting it to be more hoppy and zappy than it is, but its actually a very drinkable sessionable hoppy beer., leading to a few hoppy burps. The festival is over but there are still a few festival beers on offer and this much like the others on offer this evening is just £1.39 with my a CAMRA 50p off token. A7 A4 F8 P4 Ov15 3.7

Cask Handpump at the Gaffers Row JDW, Crewe 31/10/2009 Pine hop aroma. White head. Golden coloured and hoppy with a pine flavour. A little dryness and bitterness in a crisp malt finish.

Cask-conditioned at the Knights Templar, Bristooll 29/10/09. Golden in colour with a decent white head. Citrus and tropical fruit hop aroma with some balancing malt sweetness. Easy drinking, with juicy fruits, a hint of caramel and a dry, citrus hop finish. Good stuff.

UPDATED: NOV 13, 2009 Cask conditioned handpump Moon On The Square Northampton A golden coloured beer with a white head. The aroma has nice lemon lime and grapefruit notes. Lovely citrussy hop notes in the mouth with lime jelly notes. Fresh clean and well balanced. Good hops but there’s no overkill. Instead very sessionable Score 3.7

UPDATED: DEC 10, 2009 The Baron, 06/12/09. Straw draped with lace. Tomato stem and Turkish Delight aroma. Soft and mandarin zesty; dry and sweet, plenty of custard cream biscuit for balance. Resinous greenery on the burp. Beautiful balance of US/UK (but mostly US) hops and malt, and a fresh hop treat I never dreamt would come to Hinckley. BARACK OBAMA.

A Mes rate: Cask at Baker Street ’Sporks.
Mid gold with a decent white head. Awesome Amarillo. Full of tropical fruit, some peach and lychee and really really good supporting malt. Maybe I’d like just a touch more bitterness, but just a touch. Other than that it’s excellent. Excellent tangerine notes in the finish. Really clean considering the amount of hops in it. Resinous but not even close to being sticky. Very good stuff indeed.
