"Kentish Strong Ale".
First brewed in 1998 as a special @ 10.5% abv to celebrate Shepherd Neame’s tricentenary. A cask version at 4.5% was also released. Was made a pasteurised bottle regular at 6.5% under the name Celebration Ale. Relaunched in March 2005 as a bottle conditioned strong ale @ 6.5% simply as 1698.
Only local hops and malted barley and water drawn from our artesian well are used to brew 1698 Bottle Conditioned Kentish Strong Ale. Hops are added three times, hence it is "thrice hopped".

Bottle, Tesco. Brownish amber colour, poured with a white foam. Tastes like a slightly stronger version of other beers from the brewery, definitely the same house yeast and hop blend coming through. A little sweet, perhaps a tad thin for the abv, but a decent bitter smack and finishes decent. There seems to be something in Shepherd Neame beers that really disagrees with some people that I really don’t find, I think they are all pretty solid, but I’d probably take a Bishops Finger over this as a stronger bitter.

Bottle. Amber/copper with a very beautiful and even head. Aroma of nuts, toffee and fruits. Taste is nuts, caramell, toffee, floral hops, some fruits, a little bit of biscuit and slightly spicy. Nice hoppy bitterness and a little bit of alcoholic warmth in the aftertaste. Low to medium carbonation. Creamy. Very balanced. Lovely and just what I want from this style.

Sötét borostyán szín, kevés habbal. Malátás illat. Közepesen keserű malátás íz. Jó ivósör.

[email protected] Pours deep clear reddish amber with beige head. Aroma has light malt, biscuit, caramel and toffee and is quite sweet and fruity with grassy, flowery hops. Taste is complex fruity and malty with light malt, biscuit, caramel and toffee yet hoppy with grass and flowers and is quite sweet but balanced. Finish is fruity, sweet and dry with lasting aftertaste.

A classic English strong bitter. Strong malt, caramel and bitter hops with a forward alcohol flavour. A typical mouth feel and overall enjoyable.

Agradable cerveza. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

1698 has a russet hue with a one finger off white head that settled to a fine lacing layer. Nose is fruity raisins and hints of spice and bread. Mouthfeel is smooth and warming with a moderate carbonation. Upfront is the fruitiness which is quickly balanced by the hops bitterness. Considering its triple hopped it's not that bitter and neither does it linger long on the palate. A nice beer but... ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

I expected a bit more - fairly nondescript in the end. Drinkable enough but neither the hops nor the malt make a noticeable impact.

Bottle, 500ml. Clear orange, frothy offwhite head. Aromas of caramel, dried fruits, alcohol. Medium to heavy bodied, Harsh roasted and fruity flavors into a boozy finish.
