There’s a spicy signature to this incredibly complex cockle-warming winter ale. The nose is reminiscent of raisins, dates and molasses while the palate is vinous with tannin-like notes of leather, vanilla, apricots and a hint of rustic Armagnac on the finish. An awesome after-dinner drop.

I think this is a really great tasting winter beer. It’s a Christmas ale with fruity notes, without being too experimental and leaving you with an explosion of spices in your mouth, which I find some Christmas ales to be. A greatly balanced beer that isn’t too complicated. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Enticing aroma of sweet syrup, pours a clear reddish-orange colour with minimal head. A complex ale with flavours that transform as intense carbonation gives way to a sweet finish. Crisp, refreshing with a pleasing aftertaste. Not distinct in its flavour but obviously English. Not bad...rather enjoyed it. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from Systembolaget. A classic case of a beer that gets worse once you attention. On the surface, you get that warming Christmas ale taste but apart from some slight caramel, it is hard to discern much flavour. What comes through is an alcohol feeling that reminds me of badly made bocks. Meh, there are much better ways to celebrate christmas with more body.

Bottle at the Bishop's Finger, Smithfield, London. Pours amber with an average sized off-white head. Aroma of malt, caramel, hop, touch of vanilla and chocolate, light spice, brown sugar, citrus and dark fruit. Medium plus sweetness, light bitterness. Medium body, oily texture, average carbonation. Not bad, but not especially great either.

Bottle, 50cl. Pours clear warm amber with medium stable off white head. Aroma is rich and sweet, red dried fruits. Raisin most dominant. Mild toffee. Fruity and malty with not much else going on at first. Give it time and it will be better. Spices, honey, dry prunes, licorice and earthy hops. Flavor follows the taste. Maybe some cinnamon as well. Bread, apples, malt and more caramel and toffee. Ends medium bitter, metallic and raisins in sweet finish. Medium carbonation, thin body and texture for its style. Quite alright.
