Theres a spicy signature to this incredibly complex cockle-warming winter ale. The nose is reminiscent of raisins, dates and molasses while the palate is vinous with tannin-like notes of leather, vanilla, apricots and a hint of rustic Armagnac on the finish. An awesome after-dinner drop.

[500ml bottle, The Bottle, York] Brown ale with a thin white head. Fruity aroma, similar to Roses lime cordial, which is quite strange. Zesty fruit continues on the palate, along with some spice in the mix as well. Malty finish, some alcohol presence at the end. Lots of lime in there, which I found unusual but not unpleasant [22122008]

500 ml clear bottle, from Voldby Kbmandsgrd, Denmark. ABV is 7.0%. Beautiful clear amber colour, big head, slightly off-white. Aroma of light-struck hops and toffee, with hints of Christmas spices. The flavour is initially fruity and spicy with noticeable alcohol, but is not as sweet as expected, and ends in a rather sharp and peppery hoppy bitterness. Dry and "dusty" bitter aftertaste, nearly metallic. Not as "rich and smooth" as promised on the label, and not very well balanced. Must be better cask conditioned?

2007 bottle. Dull tired tasting beer. Malty and slightly hoppy but not joined up or balanced. Contrasts oddly with the older bottles with Cherry Brandy and the like which still taste good! 2.0

2010 bottle at the Sun Inn, Kelvedon. Clear amber beer, little white head. Light crisp palate. Rich malt with mild cream. Dried fruits and a little spice and a trace of banana. Improved beyond all recognition of a couple of years ago and now a decent beer!

Bottle. A clear, amber beer with a small, firm, off-white to beige head. Lots of toffee on the nose, and some spiced, herbal thing I cant identify. Full-bodied and pleasantly carbonated. Toffee, herbal hops, fine bitterness and a touch of warming alcohol in the flavor. Toffee, bitterness and some herbal notes in the end. Some fennel maybe? Sort of boring, but tasteful. 110108

500 mL bottle from Beers of Europe. A dark clear ale with a light hoppy aroma. This is pleasant, but a little plain. For a 7% beer its pretty smooth. A case of style of over substance.
