Hailing from the tradition of 18th Century IPAs, which relied on generous hopping to protect exports during arduous journeys, this modern incarnation retains the strength, body and strong hop character which is synonymous with this beer’s provenance.

A glorious showcase of the distinct, heavily hopped beers for which Shepherd Neame is famed, India Pale Ale delivers potent bitterness, offset with generous amounts of pale ale malt to deliver a balanced, yet uncompromising brew.

50cl bottle from Morrisons. Golden amber with a thin ring of white head; malty aroma with a hint of spice; full and fruity in the mouth with some caramel malt sweetness; and a dry, prickly finish leaving some toffee and mango, and a pleasant warming sensation. The best Shep beer I’ve had in a long while.

Bottle. Clear reddish amber, small white head. Sugary, slightly floral and sweet in the nose. Medium sweetness, medium bitterness. A bit sugary thin with soft carbonation.
Meh.

Bottle with the lovely vintage design label. Clear amber ale with small off-white frothy head of low retention. Malty aroma. Caramel. Biscuit. Fruit esters. Spicy hops. Medium body. Soft carbonation. Bittersweet taste. Lots of caramel end biscuit. Decent spicy hopping. Bitter finish. OK.

500ml bottle into pint glass. This beer looks perfect, golden copper colour with fulsome white head and steady medium carbonation. Laces right down the glass. Nose is forever England, subdued toffee malt and grassy hops. Body is full, texture is oily. It’s a cleansing bitter beer with a dark smoky caramel malt finish. Gorgeous example of English ale.

Fules (1197) - Gyöngyös, HUNGARY - MAR 6, 2017
Nagy, tartós hab, sötét réz szín. Karamelles, komlós, fűszeres illat. Enyhén karamelles, komlós-fűszeres íz. Közepesen testes, közepesen keserű és erősen szénsavas. Sallangoktól mentes, tisztességesen összerakott, visszafogott IPA.

Tezminator (225) - AUSTRALIA - MAR 5, 2017
Aroma: sweet malt and burnt toffee. Taste: starts with faint caramel and nuts, finishes with grassy, moderately bitter hops. A very solid English IPA.

tezarak (121) - Lengnau, SWITZERLAND - MAR 3, 2017
Poured from a 500ml bottle at home. Clear brown-copper. Some lacing. Toasty, smoky, toffee. Medium to medium/strong sweetness, mild bitterness. Medium body, oily texture. Soft carbonation.

Brewhemia (310) - Copenhagen, DENMARK - FEB 26, 2017
Light amber with white head. Sweet malty aroma (bread and caramel) and some european hoppiness (hay/grass) and some dusty-like aroma. The taste is medium sweet with flavor notes of grassy hops. Medium to strong bitter finish. Seems more malt flavored than the american IPAs I am used to drinking and less hoppy, though it has a decent hop flavor and bitterness. I actually like the balance the higher emphesis on maltflavor adds to the hoppiness. I like it.

3.5
promontor (151) - HUNGARY - FEB 16, 2017
0.5l bottle from Real hypermarket near Arad, Romania. Starts with nice off-white medium head, creamy, but quick to vanish. Body is clear with ruby colour. Moderate malty aroma. Taste is typical English malts with typical English hops, caramel, nuts, some moderate dried fruits. Aftertaste is bitter, a bit dry. Mouthfeel is smooth, silky, with moderate carbonation, very nice. Good, harmonic, well composed, but nothing special.
