Hailing from the tradition of 18th Century IPAs, which relied on generous hopping to protect exports during arduous journeys, this modern incarnation retains the strength, body and strong hop character which is synonymous with this beers provenance.

A glorious showcase of the distinct, heavily hopped beers for which Shepherd Neame is famed, India Pale Ale delivers potent bitterness, offset with generous amounts of pale ale malt to deliver a balanced, yet uncompromising brew.

500ml dark bottle from Morrisons. Attractive retro label for the current fashion of reviving old recipes - particularly IPA recipes. This is a spanking good beer. The malt is cleaner than one would expect from a retro recipe - but I think Sheps are using their marketing wisdom to simply put a spin on a modern beer. I have no doubt they consulted an old recipe, but they used modern ingredients, modern technology, and modern thinking to adjust the recipe. The malt is clean and toffee flavoured, the hops are brisk and tidy, and the yeast is non-existent. Theres no character here. Theres generous hops and malt, combined in a straight forward traditional manner that has been popular now for over ten years. So this both old fashioned and very modern. And tastes more modern than old fashioned. Theres not much of interest, and theres certainly no character. But its a good, drinkable beer. And theres nowt wrong with that.

500ml bottle into pint glass. This beer looks perfect, golden copper colour with fulsome white head and steady medium carbonation. Laces right down the glass. Nose is forever England, subdued toffee malt and grassy hops. Body is full, texture is oily. Its a cleansing bitter beer with a dark smoky caramel malt finish. Gorgeous example of English ale.

Light amber with white head. Sweet malty aroma (bread and caramel) and some european hoppiness (hay/grass) and some dusty-like aroma. The taste is medium sweet with flavor notes of grassy hops. Medium to strong bitter finish. Seems more malt flavored than the american IPAs I am used to drinking and less hoppy, though it has a decent hop flavor and bitterness. I actually like the balance the higher emphesis on maltflavor adds to the hoppiness. I like it.

0.5l bottle from Real hypermarket near Arad, Romania. Starts with nice off-white medium head, creamy, but quick to vanish. Body is clear with ruby colour. Moderate malty aroma. Taste is typical English malts with typical English hops, caramel, nuts, some moderate dried fruits. Aftertaste is bitter, a bit dry. Mouthfeel is smooth, silky, with moderate carbonation, very nice. Good, harmonic, well composed, but nothing special.

UPDATED: FEB 9, 2017 From a bottle. Caramel malty aroma and sweet caramel malt flavours with some burnt toffee, nuts and tar, almost treacle at times. Pleasant long bitter finish from hops. Smooth ale with creamy mouthfeel and medium body. Well put together and enjoyable. Classic English malty IPA.

En bouteille. Couleur brun clair, limpide. Beaucoup deffervescence mais faible mousse beige qui perdure dans le temps. Armes de sucre dorge. Got similaire, sucre dorge, un peu de noix, malt torrfi, caramel, finale un peu mtallis. Faiblement houblonn, trs voir trop sucr. Cest pas mauvais mais certainement pas impressionnant.
