Bottle shared. Lots of dark fruit, some saison yeast character. Raisin, dark plums and some fig. Cacao and berry notes as well. Finish was slightly thin. I was lit by this point. GenDV138 (7704) - Falls Church, Virginia, USA - DEC 14, 2014
Draft at Craft Heads during the Shiga Kogen Tap Takeover event. Dark brownish black with light tan head. Aromas of caramel, dark fruit, light roast. Tastes of dark fruit, malt, caramel, light roast, light funk. Medium body with a dry finish. presario (4925) - Stampede City, Alberta, CANADA - NOV 1, 2014
Thin head on dark brown. Aroma dark, wine, soy. Thin, bitter, roots nuts and berries which might be a definition of Old Ale. Not as smooth as the DDC side by side but unsure of ages. biirusaikou (2705) - - JUN 27, 2014
3 year aged. Dark cherry, licorice, touch of sour plum, rich bitter cocoa, gentle whiskey bite. Simply amazing collaboration brew, even more so in Japan, ma-gi-cal! shoulderbroken (4256) - Tokyo, JAPAN - JUN 21, 2014
3 year old version. Chocolate, boozy sweetness, interesting herb and spices. Cherry, wood? Light roast, lots going on. Really good stuff. Smooth and bit thick. Great. I liked this more than others.

Pours a clear dark brown with a nice frothy brown head. Aroma of roasted malts, dark dried fruits, spicy farmhouse yeast, pepper, licorice and a hint of light citrus. Taste is roasted malts, licorice, dark dried fruits, spicy farmhouse yeast, coffee and some alcohol. Nice smooth warming on the palate and a pleasant beer to drink. First of this style but great to drink. Wombata (627) - Kobe, JAPAN - MAY 17, 2013
Aroma: light coffee, licorice and bitter chocolate.
Flavor: pear, tropical fruit, red wine-like notes, licorice and dark chocolate which gain intensity on mid-palate through the finish.
Comment: initial flavors are quite a departure from the aroma but they do work well. Intriguing beer! jonno (2917) - JAPAN - MAR 9, 2013
Signature SK on the nose, with some faint spices and a light hoppiness wafting from the embers. Odd mix of styles like an imperial stout crossed with a saison with chocolate and dark fruit being brightened by the character of the saison yeast. Very fruity finish and slightly sour granny apples. Quite warm, but the alcohol is pretty in check for 9.5% (listed on the bottle). Another winner from these two. Just read the commercial description - definitely Impy stout ish. Gets a bit peppery as it warms. A bit too fruity for me though. Oakes (18851) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - JUN 30, 2012
Medium brown and a little bit hazy. Deep fruity, figgy character. Very rich and fruity with lots of brown sugar underneath and even some toast. Complex, deep, rich and tasty. I’m not sure how the brewers envisioned it, but this is a good traditional old ale. KyotoLefty (10689) - Kyoto, JAPAN - DEC 17, 2010
Draught at Tadg’s. I’m quite sure this version was brewed in Japan at Shiga Kogen. Milky, spicey aroma with coriander, nutmeg, citrus and other fruits, Belgian yeast. Big and black with a nice fine tan head. Strong sour, citrus edge to the flavor, a bit too strong, with spices, roasty malts, chocolate, light raisins. Complex and interesting, though a bit weird, and could lose the citrus.
