On tap at Bungalow. A ruddy amber with a clear filmy beige head. A mild fruity aroma with a dash of spice. The taste has a nice spicy zesty flavor with a decent malt body. Medium bodied, smooth and with a soft mouthfeel. Better than I remember it being from the bottle years ago, quite good.

My Bottom Line:
Lightly viscous buckwheat contributes black bean-like caramelized sugars, as citrusy hops and Saison yeast build an intriguing quencher.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam tops the misty pale brown.
-The flavor profile is original and quite pleasant throughout.
-This may be sweeter than the rest of their lineup, but I can see it going very well with soba noodles (obviously) or many meals with a delicate soy touch.
-The citrusy hops are surprisingly harmonious.

UPDATED: JUL 9, 2014 Aroma: Earthy caramel, roasted grain and malt, yeast and a banana note. Palate: Initially a full mouthfeel that quickly turns to a light bodied, very dry drink. Paradoxically it retains some creamy fullness while being light. Flavor: Starts with moderately sweet, earthy caramel, that turns into a roasted grain, malt, yeast, banana, notes of milk chocolate on the mid-palate and finish. Comment: Good aroma. A bit rustic--the soba may be what gives it it’s earthy, almostly dirty character. Better in well-stored bottle than on tap in my experience (the tap seemed to be thinner in flavor). Well made with moderate complexity. Try this when you’re in the mood for something unusual. 2/14/2013 Retasted with same score 5/18/2013 Aroma: Saison-like nose, light balsamic vinegar sourness at first, yeast, earthy grain. Flavor: roasted grainy, nutty malt, lightly grassy hop, yeast, lemon and lemon peel. Finishes with roasted nuttiness. Comment: light-medium malt that is well balanced with the lively carbonation and subtle bitterness. 3.7 score on this tasting. 5 on the Palate. 4/2014 On Tap at Marciero Aroma: earthy roasted grain, funky note, signature Belgium yeast, lemon and grapefruit came out as it warmed. Flavor: White grapefruit on initial attack that quickly gives way to earthy and then roasted, grainy flavors. Finishes with lemon and grapefruit with a lingering, moderate bitterness. Palate: Light saison-like body with bold, intense flavor. Comment: The best Soba that I’ve had yet from Shiga Kogen; hence the score has shot up. Refreshing, brilliant.

Tap at Ushi Tora 2. One year aged version. Amber, touch cloudy, small gold head. Aroma herb, little bit caramel sweetness, malty, pretty subtle but nice. Taste nice, sweet but slight savoury element, can’t get the soba, but definite Belgian yeasty element. Nice sweetness. Pretty crisp, and very drinkable. Maybe a little nondescript. It’s actually very nice, but maybe something is not quite there. Bit of hops in the taste in the background. Definitely lots of wheatiness.

Draught at Tadg’s. Slight, weak wheaty and grassy aroma. Cloudy orange/yellow color. Sourish sort of initial flavor; mid palate sweetens up a bit; final diminishes quickly with a little touch of bitterness. Thin body. Pleasant stuff, but the soba doesn’t really provide much body. Also, the less-than stellar serving condition may have affected the aroma and flavor.

soba and marachinno cherries in the nose. A tad sour, bready, soba, cherries and decent depth. Moderate soba finish.

Don’t know what ,mark was drinking, but out of the bottle this was very Belgian, with a lot of fruity esters. Fruity and sweet nose - bubblegum and banana. Same in the mouth with a bit of astrinency and a very soft tart finish. Solid, especially at 4%.
