Bottle from Dogenzaka Shinanoya. Pous dark brown, almost black, very little brown foam on top, disappears quite soon. Aroma has cocoa, toffee and a bit of boozy liquor. Biter dark chocolate also. little dusty. Drinks surprisingly smooth. It has all the flavours - light smoke, chocolate’s dry sweetness, coffee and cocoa nibs - but feels light and goes down nice and easy. 10% is nowhere to be spotted, super drinkable. It also means that it’s dangerous, beware! willisread (3651) - Nashville, Tennessee, USA - JUL 21, 2015
On tap at Craft Heads. Pitch black with a modest tan head that leaves good lacing. Aromas of black currants, prune, dark chocolate covered raisins, coffee with some notes of vanilla, whiskey and fennel. Taste is more of the same with the fruit coming out as it warms up. Very nice complexity that comes across even more pronounced as it warms. Dangerously smooth, although the alcohol comes out a bit towards the end. Great impy from Japan. UPDATED: MAY 26, 2016 Bottle.Coffee beans, dark chocolate, umami, hints of licorice. Cocoa, espresso, dark cherry, whiskey spice, baileys, smokey notes, more licorice, deep roasted finish. This is pretty amazing, obviously a beergeek favorite style, but really well done, complex and rounded, great!

Tap at Craft Beer Works Kamikaze, Osaka. Opaque black color, small steady brown head. Aroma has licorice and dark chocolate. Medium-bodied to full-bodied. Flavor has alcohol, roasted malts, dark chocolate. Alcoholic but in the nice way. Straightforward strong impy. fletchfighters (1580) - AUSTRALIA - JAN 14, 2014
Dark brown pour, settled black. Light brown head, thick and creamy. Good retention and settled to a thick collar.
Nose is roasted malts, soft licorice, and a lot of cardboard. Very dry and very dusty. Sort of a fresh cardboard smell.
Taste is a lot of dry, dusty cardboard. Some chocolate, malts, and dark fruits as well. Light carbonation and medium body. Bummer on the oxidation though jbeatty (1258) - New York, USA - NOV 11, 2013
Bottle, 2013 vintage, thanks to timE, 11/11/2013. Pours black, thin light tan head bubbling to the surface, fading to near stillness. Aroma is chocolate, nutty caramel and mild brown sugar, cherry licorice, light roast. Taste is chocolate, licorice, bit of a hoppy bite with long moderately roast finish, bitter. Medium body, almost velvet light creamy feel. Really tasty, well done. KansaiBeerLvrs (5375) - Kyoto, JAPAN - SEP 8, 2013
UPDATED: AUG 24, 2014 Draft at Bungalow’s 1st Anniversary Shiga Kogen Tap Takeover event. 9.5% 500 yen. A beautiful looking black pour with red accents & a great tan head. Mild chocolate aroma, I need to give it time to warm up. Smooth body, nice rich chocolate then some roasted coffee notes. Really good stuff. I think I even get mild hints of licorice, I don’t like licorice but in this beer it works. Had this from a bottle and this sums it up: Nutty umami dark chocolate -a classic. john_henry (170) - - JUN 13, 2013
One of the better offerings from Shiga. Conforms to style, but a little underwhelming for an imperial stout.
