UPDATED: AUG 24, 2014 Draft at Bungalows 1st Anniversary Shiga Kogen Tap Takeover event. 9.5% 500 yen. A beautiful looking black pour with red accents & a great tan head. Mild chocolate aroma, I need to give it time to warm up. Smooth body, nice rich chocolate then some roasted coffee notes. Really good stuff. I think I even get mild hints of licorice, I dont like licorice but in this beer it works. Had this from a bottle and this sums it up: Nutty umami dark chocolate -a classic.

One of the better offerings from Shiga. Conforms to style, but a little underwhelming for an imperial stout.

Bottle from Hasegawa. Very dark brown colour with thick golden head. Aroma is smoky, roasty, bit meaty, bit of caramel, some citrus hops maybe and biscuits. Bit of booze too. Taste is really nice. Boozy spikiness, coffee bitterness, maybe dark chocolate, fruity too, orange. Very nice. Long slightly bitter and very roasty finish. Thick and oily. Best Japanese imperial stout I have had I reckon.

Oxidiert malziger Antrunk mit wssrigen Beinoten. Weich, dennoch vollmundig, konstant s-malzig, die oxidierten Noten werden geringer. Rund, nicht bermig gut. 10/11/10/10/9/10

UPDATED: AUG 30, 2014 Bottle 6/2014. 6 months after purchase. Aroma: Rich, sweet dark chocolate and malty ovaltine blended with coffee and graham cracker. Palate: Very smooth, full-bodied, yet elegant. Flavor: Rich dark chocolate, graham cracker, light vanilla bourbon. These flavors power through the mid-palate and finish where rounded coffee flavor gradually appear. Mild, understated bitterness from grain shows throughout. Comment: Deft use of barrel aging. This is developing well in the bottle and is even better than I expected. Initially, this had an almost light- medium body but this transformed into a medium-full body with time. The alcohol and barrel flavors are integrating well. I have raised my score to reflect these changes. On Tap. Aroma: Earthy malt and grain with some earthy and grassy hop. Palate: Well-blended flavors. Flavor: Mild, roasted coffee, a mix of mild and moderately bitter chocolate with a touch of grassy hop. Comments: Another strong showing from Shiga Kogen. 3.9 Score.

Black coloured beer with medium carbonation and a small brown head. Light roasted sweet malty hinted and sweet chocolaty aroma. Full light creamy palate. Finish is creamy, strong bitter sweet. Nice stout however misses some sweet creamy bitterness.

The pour reveals a murky dark brown color with a thin beige head. Aroma of brown sugar and licorice. The flavor is very sweet, theres licorice and brown sugar. The body is light to medium with a liquorous texture and gentle carbonation. Not bad, but a bit too sweet.

Dark brown in colour with a thin beige head, no lacing. Aroma is roasty, some soya sauce, chocolate, light burnt malts. Flavour has lots of soya, burnt chocolate malts, light roast, moderate bitterness. Bitter mouthfeel, medium/light body, medium carbonation. Finishes long with a light roast then seems to disappear.

This was weird, lots of soya sauce for me. Bizarre.

Bottle at Mondial 2009 in Montreal, Quebec.

Sampled on June 4, 2009.

Black coloured beer with small off-white head and no carbonation visible. A roasted aroma with a bitter touch. Full palate. Finish is malty, coffee like. Ok, there are much better though.
