One of the better offerings from Shiga. Conforms to style, but a little underwhelming for an imperial stout.

Craft Islington bottle share. Thanks to Leighton and TimE. Opaque dark brown beer, small bubbly tan head. Airy palate, dry and with good fine carbonation. Bitter dark malts, roasty bitterness. Floral bitterness. Dry bitter finish. Harsh and doing and nothing for me.
Bottle at Craft Islington. Thanks to Leighton’s Japanese adventure. It pours cloudy darkest brown - black with a small tan head. The aroma is toasty, roasted malt, charred wood, dark chocolate, earth and ash. The taste is rich roasted malt, charred wood, umami, coffee grounds, cocoa, leather, spice, ash and warming booze through the finish. Medium + body and fine carbonation. April 2017 - Bottle share at CBC Islington. Big thanks to Leighton. As ’Shiga Kogen Takashi Imperial Stout’. Opaque black with a foamy light brown head. Aroma is earthy wtih dark chocolate. Body is light, smooth with tingly carbonation. Taste is dry and alcoholic with more earth and dark chocolate, spicy finish. Quite good. Dark chocolate, cacao, dark, roasted malts, burnt flavours, earthy. Black, tiny, beige head. Light bitter. More chocolate, dark, dry cacao, ash, soft carbonation, full bodied. Bottle. Pours near black with a low light tan head. Roasty savoury aroma, anise, ash, raisin. Pretty simple flavour, dry roasted dark malt. Lightish body and flavour for an imperial, drinks and tastes more foreign stout. A touch flat with some warmth. Not bad, just lacks a little oomph.

Medium sweet flavour with bitter coffee, baking cocoa, more ashy roast. Medium bodiednwith fine to average carbonation. Finishes with strong bang cocoa, hearty roast, ash, scorched earth. Bottle from the brewery shop (bottled in March 2016). Strong dark roast nose, lots of dark chocolate and coffee. Very dark brown, with translucent edges and a nice beige head. Roast malt, burnt, chocolate all up and down the tongue, licorice, molasses, and hints of vanilla. Medium-heavy body, a bit sticky and somewhat light for an imperial. Bottle from Dogenzaka Shinanoya. Pous dark brown, almost black, very little brown foam on top, disappears quite soon. Aroma has cocoa, toffee and a bit of boozy liquor. Biter dark chocolate also. little dusty. Drinks surprisingly smooth. It has all the flavours - light smoke, chocolate’s dry sweetness, coffee and cocoa nibs - but feels light and goes down nice and easy. 10% is nowhere to be spotted, super drinkable. It also means that it’s dangerous, beware!
