Brewed for Masaji Beer Project.
名前のまんまのスタイルです。 箕面ビールといえば、スタウト、インペリアルスタウトの黒い二種、そしてW-IPAの印象が強烈。 なら、両方いっぺんにつくっちゃえ、ってことで、黒いW-IPAに。 他にもいくつかアイディアはあったのですが、"W-IBA"って名前が浮かんだら、もうそれしか考えられなくなっちゃいました。 ぼくららしいスタイルでもあるかなと。 「格好よくて強面で、一見ちょっと近寄りがたい。でも、話してみると、その人柄にいっぺんに魅了されちゃう。」 そんな大下社長のイメージそのままの、男前なビールになったのではと勝手に思ってます。 アルコール度数は9%! 黒いです。でも、飲んでみるとホップの圧倒的な香りと爽快な苦み、ドライな飲み口で、すいすい飲めちゃう。 先日発売の IBA の兄貴分というわけですが、はっきり、しっかり「兄貴」です。 一度飲んだら、社長の虜!? 9%の黒というと、志賀高原ビールにはあの「たかしくん」というビールがあるのですが、もちろんそれにも負けない強力な個性で、かつ、はっきり性格が違います。 「まさじ対たかし」なんて映画のポスターが頭に浮かびます。(ゴジラっぽいやつね。) できれば、これからも時々つくっていきたい大事なビールになりました。

Draft at El Nubichinon in Yokohama. Very roasy, complex beer with burnt espresso, tobacco leaves, dark bitter chocolate.

Draft - Dark roast and nice hoppy notes. Deep brown with a small light brown head. Big roasty bitterness but hops fade into the background.

Draught at Tenma. Pitch black with a nice low head. Great citrus hop nose with chocolate and a bit of smoke and licorice. Smoky flavor, coffee, licorice, very big hops flavor all around. Excellent.

My Bottom Line:
Floral hop resins burst through leveled roasted and caramelized malts in this smooth, loquacious Imperial Black IPA.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam tops the brown-hued darkness.
-There is balance in the intensity.
-Citrus notes are found throughout as well.
-After being a while in Japan, this is one beer which stands out greatly. Such wonderful hoppiness ! Another beer that screams ‘Vermont’ or West Coast US.
-The mouthfeel is super smooth and effervescent. Surprisingly easy drinking for 9% abv.

Tap takeaway from El Nubichinom, Yokohama. Black colour with a small beige head. Aroma is bitter, citrus, hops. Flavour is bitter chocolate, fruit, some smokiness. Well balanced.

UPDATED: DEC 16, 2016 tobacco leaves, brownies, molasses, slightly astringent nose. Smooth, lots of roastiness with molasses and not enough hopping IMO, but solid mouth. Very well made alcohol well hidden. Nice, but the regular IBA works better. More hops would be better. 2016 version is hopped to shit and super bitter. Like 2016 version better

Bottle from Asahiya 2012 version (old review) 9% a bottle from Asahiya. This beer has a fruity, citrus aroma which is quite nice and pours black with a beige head. That surprised me as I thought it was a double IPA! Once I double checked the label I saw it said W-IBA... Hop at the front of the mouth, dark malts at the middle and a bitter hop finish. A very solid Black IPA!

Takeaway from El Nubi. Brown colour, golden head. Aroma is bit skunky, very bitter. Taste is nice, good bitterness. Bitter, slightly roasty, sweetness, bit herbal. Nice.

maekchu (3944) - Hirakata, JAPAN - APR 20, 2013
Draught at Beer Belly Higobashi. Deep, dark, yeast and malt with some extreme hops. Very dark brown, small tan head. Excellent balance right away / malt powers along, and then some good hop burn comes in. Black Sun stuff. Medium-heavy body. Some final burn, and then an exceptionally smooth and balanced finish. This was the last beer on a long night of many beer -- and it still made quite and impression. Very good.

Bottle from Tanakaya. Pours a deep brown with no head. Very hop forward nose with loads of ruby red grapefruit and pine with some light marijuana, mango and a touch of yuzu along with cacao and Italian roasted coffee. Average carbonation with a slightly syrupy mouthfeel, but not overly so at all. Lots of bitterness on the palate with citrus all over the place...more grapefruit zest and lemon zest. Finish is pithy bitterness along with espresso and cacao roasted bitterness. Wow, this is an intense beer. Not for the faint of heart and that is awesome...more beers with this attitude in Japan please.
