My Bottom Line:KyotoLefty (10808) - Kyoto, JAPAN - MAR 3, 2013
Floral hop resins burst through leveled roasted and caramelized malts in this smooth, loquacious Imperial Black IPA.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam tops the brown-hued darkness.
-There is balance in the intensity.
-Citrus notes are found throughout as well.
-After being a while in Japan, this is one beer which stands out greatly. Such wonderful hoppiness ! Another beer that screams ‘Vermont’ or West Coast US.
-The mouthfeel is super smooth and effervescent. Surprisingly easy drinking for 9% abv.
Draught at Tenma. Pitch black with a nice low head. Great citrus hop nose with chocolate and a bit of smoke and licorice. Smoky flavor, coffee, licorice, very big hops flavor all around. Excellent.

Tap at Watering Hole, 06/29/2013. Pours brown, nearly black, thin creamy white head covering the surface, copious lacing. Aroma is tangerine, piney hops, chocolate, roasted malts. Taste is citrus, grapefruit hops, pulpy, smooth roasted malts, long bitter chocolate finish. Thick body. Killer black IPA, was really glad to have tried this one.

Bottle from Tanakaya. Pours a deep brown with no head. Very hop forward nose with loads of ruby red grapefruit and pine with some light marijuana, mango and a touch of yuzu along with cacao and Italian roasted coffee. Average carbonation with a slightly syrupy mouthfeel, but not overly so at all. Lots of bitterness on the palate with citrus all over the place...more grapefruit zest and lemon zest. Finish is pithy bitterness along with espresso and cacao roasted bitterness. Wow, this is an intense beer. Not for the faint of heart and that is awesome...more beers with this attitude in Japan please. Travlr (26406) - Charlotte, North Carolina, USA - APR 2, 2013
Draft at El Nubichinon in Yokohama. Very roasy, complex beer with burnt espresso, tobacco leaves, dark bitter chocolate. shoulderbroken (4256) - Tokyo, JAPAN - APR 3, 2013
Takeaway from El Nubi. Brown colour, golden head. Aroma is bit skunky, very bitter. Taste is nice, good bitterness. Bitter, slightly roasty, sweetness, bit herbal. Nice. mrjez (711) - Osaka, JAPAN - DEC 20, 2016
Tap at Yellow Ape. Olive black pour, lots of beige lacing. Hop forward nose, pine, plenty of citrus, but also plenty of chocolate and roasted malt. The citrus hops show up front before chocolate and a touch of smoke take over and smooth out the middle. The pine kicks in late with a rising bitterness and just a hint of booze. A seamless journey, really enjoyable and surprisingly easy-drinking, I finished my glass in a short time.
