COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Shipyard Independence Ale is a blonde best bitter with a good hop bite and 4.2% alcohol by volume. The idea for this collaborate beer stemmed out of Shipyard Brewing Company’s relationship with Marston’s. Alan Pugsley, who is originally from Hampshire, England, moved to Maine in 1986 after working with Peter Austin at the world-famous Ringwood Brewery. Marston’s Beer Company now owns Ringwood and the brewery’s Old Thumper Extra Special Ale is brewed in the United States solely by Shipyard.

Cask @ Sea Dog, Bangor, ME: So although I’ve entered this one as Shipyard I did have it as a Sea Dog product. However, the only info on the product found online lists it as a Shipyard product, thus here it is. I guess I lucked out not only stopping in when they had this, but had it on cask. It came yellow with an oddly big foamy white head for a cask product. Aroma is a little clunky with grainy, sweet, and vegetal notes (familiar for Sea Dog/Shipyard) but with noticeable citrus. Offers a subtle but nice spicy and floral hopping and coats the tongue, more body than I’d experienced by a non-stout here. Not much sweetness to find, very interesting.
