3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
12 oz bottle. Pours dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma somewhat muted, malty, chocolate, a bit of coffee roastiness, Flavor is pretty decent, again quite malty, a bit of sweetness, more coffee and chocolate, and some spice on the finish. I didn’t really pick up much chili, just some general spiciness. Palate is fairly heavy, thick mouthfeel. Carbonation is pretty decent, maybe tending just a bit to the harsh side. Overall very decent, if not as interesting as they try to make it sound.
12 oz bottle: Aroma has got a roasted nutty chocolate overtone to it, very light wheat undertones, and a nutmeg and coriander note intermingled. Appearance is a cloudy brown with a hint of orange and an off white head that diminishes into a soapy film. Taste is where this brew shines, the chocolate nuttiness of the malt, then a very subtle but noticeable chili note, the backend wheat notes of a Witbeir. Palate has got a very carbonated mouthfeel, with the caramel maltiness first up then falls asleep into a nice nutty almost oat like creaminess. Overall, Very interesting beer from AB. Cheers! 12oz bottle - hotstuff (5274) - Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA - OCT 10, 2014
Aroma - toasted malt, super subtle chocolate (reminded me of a chocolate cola) but mostly a bland sweetness covers this aroma.
Appearance - mahogany body, 3-finger tan head, average retention, zero lacing
Mouthfeel - thin, watery, light bodied, light-medium carbonation
Flavor - light spices, light on the chocolate almost too watered down. Sapped the character right out of it.
Overall - drinkable, a ghost of what it probably was like as a high grav beer..would have liked to try that.
Backlog rating on 11-02-2012 at Cap n’ Cork Covington Plaza, Fort Wayne, IN. This bottled beer has a small tan head with a lengthy retention, amber body, fast rising carbonation, and spotty amounts of lacing. The aroma is chocolate, malt, wheat, and sweet. The flavor is chocolate, malt, sweet, wheat, and some fruitiness. The mouthfeel is smooth and this beer is medium bodied. I am not impressed with the flavor of this beer as it just does not come together very well. Hence, this beer is not on my to drink again list. CrimsonTide (1) - - SEP 27, 2014 does not count
I was very excited to try this beer, not just as a shock top fan, but I love strange, dark, and flavorful beers. This on the other hand, fell short of every expectation I had. It was absolutely terrible. Have never tasted a beer quite like it and that isn’t a good thing. I wouldn’t even drink the rest of the pack...much less the actual beer in my hand. My friend would’t finish his, and he will drink just about anything. About 3 weeks later, Walmart had marked the price so far down that they were $3.50 for a 6 pack...if that tells you anything. slowrunner77 (13006) - Reno, Nevada, USA - SEP 22, 2014
"For a mass product, it was ok - but having this brew (with similar extra-cirricular ingredients) after Mayan Maybe showcased the weaknesses. It’s drinkable and fairly tasty, but the spices used are light, as is the body. Needs to be a little more assertive to be taken seriously."

Appearance – Poured a lighter brown color with some orange highlights. Upon pouring there is a two finger off white head that has a good level of retention, eventually fading to give a nice level of lacing.
Smell – The aroma is heaviest of a sweet chocolate and a caramel smell. Mixed with this is a lighter roasted malt and wheat aroma.
Taste –The taste starts out with a wheaty and roasted flavor. As the taste advances, a chocolate flavor enters the taste. The chocolate starts out sweeter with notes of a caramel nature mixed within. It then dries out some as the caramel fades. While it dries out, it again then sweetens as a citrus flavor comes to the tongue near the end of the taste. At the end a somewhat off chocolately citrus wheat flavor is left to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the just below medium side with a carbonation level that is slightly higher than average. The lighter body did not go well with the chocolate flavors of the brew, but the carbonation at least made it quicker drinking by not accentuating the more off mix of chocolate, wheat and citrus.
Overall – Not a beer I would likely take on again. The flavors just did not transition or even go well with each other. Not my thing.
Cloudy chestnut color. surprisingly good lacing. Smokey flavor but doesn’t overwhelm the chocolate malt. nice thick mouthfeel. People lament the lack of flavor but for a wheat ale this is great.
