COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pear Saison with profuse hoppiness. A collaboration between Half Acre Beer Co. and Short’s.

This version was brewed at Short’s Brewing Co.

Captain Fantasy is a lighter bodied ale with a bright, clear, golden color. This saison is brewed with pear to compliment the aromas of spice and the fruity fragrance of Sorachi Ace hops. Captain Fantasy has flavors of sweet pear and tart lemon, and a lively amount of carbonation cleanses and refreshes the palate. The overall fruitiness of Captain Fantasy is interrupted by an assertive hop bitterness that dominates the finish.

Pours a yellow orange clear with large white head. Nose is oranges, fruit, banana. Light body jumps across the tongue. Grapefruit oranges, a tinge of dryness with a finish that makes the mouth water. Like a lot of other shorts beers I’ve never had anything quite like this, and it’s delicious.

UPDATED: AUG 28, 2014 Bottle: 2011 release. Thanks, Jeff. Somewhat clear, somewhat cloudy bright amber-orange body with a soapy white head that settles quickly. Aroma is zesty cotton yeast, sharp white pepper, light funk, very light pear & lemon zest. Taste is sharp pear, melon, & zesty white pepper with notes of bready yeast, wet cotton, & some grassy hops. Fruitier with time, more juicy notes of pear, melon, & tangerine, still with heavy notes of yeast. Nice stuff.

2013 Release: Fresher than my last bottle. Much bigger notes of pear & melon, less cotton & more fluffy, bread-like yeast. More pronounced hops, but still not bitter. I think I like it fresh better... Again, a pretty nice saison.

12 oz. bottle from late 2011. Pours a bright golden color with a medium sized white head. The aroma and flavor had nice herbal, floral and citrus hops, additional pear fruitiness, yeast, bubble gum, light dusty funk. This was very interesting and fun. Nice summery saison during the winter.

On tap at the brewpub. Hazy golden pour with a white head. Nice fruitiness with just the right amount of hop bitterness. Solid saison.

A nice balance of pepper, bubblegum, cloves, and fruit esters from the Belgian yeast. Tastes a bit like Juicy Fruit gum. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draft at crunchy's tap takeover. Pale yellow with minimal head. Smells like tart pears and perfume. Tastes like tart flowers.

Deciding to finally try these side by side I opened both the Half Acre and Shorts versions in order. This, the first, was not quite as good. I can’t put a finger on why. On its own it stands as a fine saison and I would have had no problem finishing it if tastybeer weren’t splitting the bottle.

Aroma / Appearance - The glowing carbonated base and minimal white head do not set it up for great things. Somehow though it works. The pears and peaches provide this nice tartness and hops that linger in the air like pollen.

Flavor / Palate - Pears and peaches sweeten the mouth. The transition carries into a dry yeasty finish that has a nice tang. Tropical in nature this was not the sort of thing I was expecting. For that I give it high marks even though the Half Acre version works better.

Bottle, coutesy Brigadier, thanks! Gold pour, white head. Good retention/lace. Aroma of pear, sweaty/cheesy hops, mineral, light dust, fruity ester. Taste is bitter, melon, pear. Palate is dry, high carbonation, bitter finish.
