Pours a hazy and sediment-filled amber. No head, minimal lacing. Tons of orange on the nose, with a hint of pepper. Bittersweet orange is the first thing on the tongue, immidiately followed by the spice from those green peppercorns. This is a fail. Not digging this at all. It’s like peppery, stale, uncarbonated fruit juice. drewbeerme (3920) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - OCT 1, 2010
pours glowing amber white head, nose sweet grain and cereal. flavors have hot alc heat, grapey, fusel alc, thin and boozy, SHIG (4962) - Wasilla, Alaska, USA - SEP 24, 2010
Bottle thanks to jdubfl: Poured a reddish color with light off white head. Aroma is a mix of citrus fruit, spice, and hops. Taste is very acidic with citrus fruit which gives it a very hop bitterer effect. kbutler1 (1381) - North Carolina, USA - SEP 24, 2010
Sampled at the Great Taste of the MW. The 2010 Anniversary edition. Pours a truly awesome blood orange reddish tan color with a tan head. Liquid ruby comes to mind. Grapefruit and orange aromas in the nose, very pleasant. Very sweet and malty start that then turns slightly bitter. Medium mouthfeel. This is a beer that I hate to rush and drink as it really is very good. beerguy101 (5360) - Newark, California, USA - SEP 19, 2010
Sampled at GABF on 9/17/2010. This barleywine pours a medium brown color from the tap. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is fruity, caramel, oranges and sweet. Medium bodied Barleywine/wheatwine. The malts are caramel, fruity and sweet, lots of oranges. The hops are herbal. Nice balance. A strange combination of flavors for sure, but somehow they work well together. Lots of orange rind flavor at the finish. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

Bottle thanks to badnewsbeers. Pours with a hazy but vibrant blood orange juice colored body and a thin off-white head that recedes. Aroma of grapefruit, orange, citrus zest, red wine, pepper, vanilla, esters, yogurt. Taste is citrus, light acidity (not infection or wild bugs), orange, pepper, earth, light cedar in the finish. Finishes pretty dry and sort of earthy. Lasting cigar box flavor. Some bitterness (seems more spiced based tannins than hop bitterness for some reason). A very different beer. Medium amount of tingly bubbles. Very dry for a barley/wheat wine. mgatesy (23) - Michigan, USA - SEP 9, 2010
Tastes like orange juice. Peppercorns are very subtle, but add a little bite. fear025 (213) - Downers Grove, Illinois, USA - SEP 8, 2010
Aroma:Sweet orange, sweet malt, sweet hops in the nose.
Appearance:Dark honey color, very little head, low retention, low lacing.
Taste:Lots of orange, some grapefruit rind in the foretaste. Very sweet. In the midtaste, the hops come through a little more. The hops are all citrus. The slight orange tang continues through the aftertaste.
Palate:Light to medium body, a little bit abrasive on the back of my throat as I drink.
Overall:This is an incredible and complex wheatwine with amazing orange flavors. jtclockwork (16581) - , New Jersey, USA - SEP 8, 2010
Bottle from a generous trader. Pours a clear blood red. Nose of strong orange, lemon, citrus, peppercorn, spice, peel and coriander. Taste is strong orange and peppercorn with spices. Very sweet. Lots of citrus rind. milewide (2249) - Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA - SEP 2, 2010
Sour and tangy taste and aroma. Very cloudy, and light brown color. Sure didn’t taste the 11.7% alcohol! Another really eclectic brew from Shorts!
