Bottled. An unclear dark golden beer with a thin white head. The aroma is sweet with strong notes of grapefruit, as well as medium notes of hops. THe flavor is sweet - yet with an acidity from the strong notes of grapefruit, combining with medium notes of hops, leading to an acidic finish, where the alcohol burns in the throat.

Bottle shared by Alexsdad06. Poured a cloudy copper color with an average frothy off-white head that mostly lasted with good to excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy complex citrus hoppy and woody aroma with a small alcohol tone. Medium to full body with a dry smooth texture. Medium to heavy bittersweet flavor with a medium bittersweet and small alcohol bite finish of moderate to long duration. This is a standout beer.

12oz bottle acquired in trade with hoppymeal (thanks!!). Tasted side by side by side (Original , Dry hop, & Grapefruit versions). Poured a medium and hazy amber color with a small sized off white head. Aromas of grapefruit, citrus, caramel, vanilla, some wood, and pine. Tastes of citrus rinds, grapefruit, caramel, wood, and vanilla. This one was definitely more ’citrusy’ than the other 2 and was more balanced. Again the barrel aging was done very nicely. Shorts kicks ass again!

Appearance: hazy dark orange, wispy beige head,
Aroma: sweet malt aroma with lots of citrus character balanced by lots of oak,
Flavor: sweet crystal malt flavor, lots of grapefruit leads to a bitter rhind character, sweetness comes in a second wave with a touch of bourbon and vanilla to balance the huge grapefruit, long bitter finish,

12 oz. bottle. Pours a hazy dark amber color with a small off white head. The aroma is sweetened grapefruit peel, caramel candy, and some alcohol. The flavor is more big grapefruit and citrus. It also has a large caramel malt component. Everything is thick, resiny, and smooth. The alcohol does show through with this, but doesn’t distract from the overall. I also believe that some of the original bitterness has disapeared and this now has some barleywine like qualities. This was still very enjoyable.

Taster on tap at GTMW. Hazy orange amber red color. Thin ring of off-white head. Leaves decent thicker bits of lace. Medium to bigger body. Smooth, kind of creamy crisp thicker texture to it, light slick, light drying in the finish. More grapefruit hop in the aroma than what I was expecting for an 8+% DIPA from 2006. A more fresh batch? It’s gotta be. Caramel taste. Moderate sweet. Light spiciness Lighter bitter. Some whiskey woodiness. Solid, tasty stuff to sip on. Malt forward, but a lot hoppier than expected for how old I should think it is. Impressive, in that way. Drinks like a decent mildly hoppy grapefruit barrel aged barleywine. I can deal with that.

Bottle sampled on 10/13/07: Transparent bronze golden with a thin ring of off-white head. Aroma of slightly soapy floral notes and big citrusy grapefruit and oranges with a touch of sweet caramel. Body starts fairly full and slightly sweet with big grapefruity hoppiness drying toward a more bitter citric finish. An interesting brew.

On tap: The aroma consists of caramel, toffee, citrus, and faint grapefruit. It’s a mostly transparent amber with some grapefruit floaties. The flavor starts with caramel, toffee, and some citrus. The finish has moderate-heavy grapefruit, light bourbon, and vanilla. It’s medium bodied with minimal carbonation.

Poured a hazy amber color with no head or lacing. Aroma of grapefruit, vanilla, floral hops, citrus, light pine, and wood. Taste of sweeter grapefruit, citrus, light acid, sweeter caramel, and toffee with a bit of alcohol as well.

Bottle. Barely any head on top of the dark copper body. The aroma was definite grapefruit with some fresh bread. Lots of alcohol in the nose. The taste was grapefruit with bread crust. A little bit of soap comes through in the tangy finish. Good stuff, I am surprised this flavor combo hadn’t been tried before.
