4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled on 10/30/2012. Pours hazy very dark reddish brown color with a nice 1-2 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty foamy lacing clings down the glass. Aromas of huge grapefruit, mango, orange zest, pineapple, toast, pine, roasted malt, light char, grass, floral, and light herbal. Damn nice aromas with a great hop profile and solid roasted malt backbone. Taste of big dark roasted malt, coffee, grapefruit, orange zest, pine, light char, pineapple, toast, floral, grass, and piney spiciness. Nice amount of pine and roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, toast, pineapple, roasted malt, light char, coffee, pine, floral, grass, and piney spiciness on the finish for a good bit. Great flavor balance and hop complexity; with a nice roasted malt backbone that is well balanced with the hop flavors; almost zero cloying flavors are present on the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy and sticky mouthfeel that is very nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with nearly zero warming present on the finish. Overall this is an excellent Black IPA! Great hop flavor profile and balance with roasted malts; and very smooth to drink. A very enjoyable offering as expected.
Dark brown pour. Thick tan 2-3 finger rocky head. Not much aroma but bitter malty taste. Pretty well done black IPA. crajun (1254) - , Texas, USA - JAN 19, 2016
bottle from winter secret santa. gotta admit that I do not understand this style. I had zero bitterness - not complaining. This beer took on many characteristics of a porter - I get a zing of hops at end but no bitterness. beer on thin side. zach8270 (4021) - Henrietta, New York, USA - NOV 5, 2015
(bottle - 12 oz) Dark brown pour with a thin tan head. Floral hop aroma with some dark malts and a light fruit sweetness. Flavor is hoppy and floral at the front with a bitter coffee and chocolate roasty aftertaste. [9/11/15] drfabulous (8224) - Lexington, Kentucky, USA - OCT 16, 2015
12 ounce bottle thanks to Matt. Dark pour with a kind of malty spice molasses thing going on. Some hops. Different. JaBier (8112) - Capital City, Ohio, USA - SEP 6, 2015
Bottle purchased at Rishi’s in Grand Rapids. Chunky brown pour with a thick tan head. Aroma of malt, rye, pine and slight roast. Malty and chocolatey flavor with caramel and roast accents before a spicy rye and piney hop finish.

Aromas of roasted coffee with a strong spruce hop presence; all overlaid by a wild, rustic rye flavor.
Medium body; a fairly long finish with roasted coffee and the hop bitterness. ineedbeer (2203) - Oakland, California, USA - JUL 19, 2015
Poured from a bottle dated 04/14/2015.
Aroma is fairly malt forward with some light roast and chocolate, light dark caramel and some moderate toasted bread. Moderate hop notes, woody with some pine resin and grapefruit. Slightly dank.
Pours dark brown, not quite black with a medium large, moderately thick, light mocha head head that recedes fairly quickly to the edges where it lingers.
Flavor is slightly sweet with some light chocolate and roast notes. Medium light toasted bread and cracker malt character. Moderate bitterness. Some medium light citrus notes with some pine resin and woodsy hop character.
Mouthfeel is medium light bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth.
Overall, an alright black IPA. Maltier in the aroma than I expected, but the flavor isn’t as roast forward. Hop profile is a bit muted but it works for a black IPA. mallons72 (208) - livonia, Michigan, USA - JUL 8, 2015
Something seems to be missing here. Not enough malt, hops, im not sure? Liked last years black ipa better. WillRunForBeer (2702) - Massachusetts, USA - JUN 10, 2015
Another Short’s extra from umich03jm. Thanks, Jason! 12oz bottle pours nearly black with a nice beige head. Aroma is toffee, raisin and pine. Flavor is burnt caramel, toffee, char and pine. Finish is pine bitterness... Just enough to balance. I got this about five weeks ago, so the hops might be a bit subdued compared with fresh. This is pretty tasty, regardless. arminjewell (9689) - East Lansing, Michigan, USA - MAY 28, 2015
Pour on tap at Crunchy’s, dark reddish orange pour with off white head, aroma brought notes of caramel, rye, spice, touch of fruit into citrus, some pine, hints of earth. Taste was a mix of orange, caramel, toffee into some pine, grass, toasted bread, rye and spice, finishing slightly bitter.
