Opaque black - brown beer, tidy pale tan head. Light palate. Semi dry. Mildly roasted dark malts. A little piney hop and a and trace of insipid red berry fruits underneath. Finishes semi dry. An okay black IPA but there are many very good ones around and this is a little underwhelming.
A: The beer pours a dark brown color with a finger of off-white head.
S: Has that sort of funky aroma that a lot of black IPAs have. A decent bit of hoppiness, a bit of grass and pine. There is a light fruitiness, also a touch of fruit/plums. Maybe some chocolate, too.
T: Kind of sweet, a little bit of chocolate. Sort of hoppy, some sweet hop flavors, a bit of plum, some citrus hops, too. A light pine bitterness and a bit of roasted malt.
M: Medium bodied with a medium carbonation.
O: Not as hoppy as I would have liked, but pretty decent. djd07 (15256) - Houston, Texas, USA - FEB 13, 2012
Bottle at Camp Beer IX. Pours a dark brown with small off white head. The aroma is a flloral hop and pine. Thin mouthfeel with smoke and malt and nice bitter finish. A good Black IPA from Shorts. Ratman197 (15094) - Arvada, Colorado, USA - SEP 29, 2011
Bottle poured a clear dark brown with a small lasting tan head. Aromas of roasted malt, charcoal, grapefruit, pine and light orange. Palate was medium bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of charcoal, roasted malt, pine and grapefruit with a smooth dry lingering bitter finish. Tmoney99 (14747) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - DEC 18, 2010
Draft sample. Poured clear ruby black color with an average frothy light brown head that lasted with good lacing. Moderate to heavy toasted and floral hop aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Moderate to heavy toasted bitter flavor with a moderate to heavy bitter finish of medium to long duration. Very good brew that I would recommend to a freind.

Sampled on draft at GTMW 2011. Pours nearly black but clear and with ruby highlights. Large creamy tan head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of roasted malts, and bitter earthy hops. The taste is bitter earthy hops and faint roasted malts. Medium bodied. Dogbrick (13384) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - SEP 8, 2011
This beer pours a dark brown color with a medium foamy tan head that recedes steadily to a film. Rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of piney and floral hops as well as roasted malts. Medium body with a moderately bitter resiny hops character, and flavors of citrus, pine and sweet toasty malt. The finish is hoppy up front with a lingering malt sweetness left over. Well-balanced Black IPA that pretty much nails what I perceive to be the style’s goal. deyholla (11900) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - OCT 18, 2010
On tap at the Ashley’s Shorts event. Poured black with a brown head that dissipated quickly to the edges and laced slightly. Aroma had a slight roasted malt note with lots of pine and a slight musty note. Flavor was full of roasted malts with a slight dark chocolate note and a growing pine note with a strong finish. cubs (10651) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - OCT 25, 2011
Bottle @ home. Deep brown appearance with a light brown head. Toasty chocolate malty, mild toffee, vanilla, organic, slightly piney hoppy aroma. The hops in the nose aren’t as potent as done black ipas but still nice. Dark chocolate, mild caramel, roasty malty, bitter, piney, organic hoppy flavor. Solid brew. arminjewell (9689) - East Lansing, Michigan, USA - MAY 28, 2015
