Bottle thanks to mikem409. Nose is immediately a deep, dark, cocoa and just short of roast and coffee, but definitely some deep dark chocolate. A moderately grassy hoppy nose that is more along the lines of a hoppy American stout than a black IPA. Hops seems grassy and piney, not much fruitiness to them. Taste is immediately roasted grain at first, followed by a strong hop bitterness and grassy, almost astringent hop flavor. Not getting much barrel character; not much booziness, but some light drying astringent finish. Not sure if it is the wood or the hops, but seems to detract from the beer. Overall, I was hoping for some more body, but I guess that would make it a stout. Not a great example of a style I don’t really care for, but its not bad in any particular aspect. On tap at the Shorts Anniversary Party. Was very pumped to try this one. After loving the original I had high hopes. And it did not disappoint. Full of chocolate, vanilla, bourbon, a ton of dark fruit, and coffee flavors. One of my favorites of the event. I would absolutely love to have some more. Keep it up Shorts.

On tap: The aroma consists of chocolate, maple syrup, light coffee, bourbon, and vanilla. It’s a dark brown with no transparency and a small tan head. The flavor starts with chocolate and maple syrup. The finish has some light pine, vanilla, bourbon, and a touch of coffee. It’s medium bodied light-moderate carbonation. Had this beer at the GTMW 2013 and just getting around to rating it. Poured black with frothy head. Aroma-molasses, bourbon and vanilla. Taste is so sweet and reminds me of a rich chocolate cake. UPDATED: APR 28, 2014 Tap: Sludgy, complete darkness with a frothy, tan foam head showing decent retention & leaving a little bit of lacing behind. Aroma has wonderfully smooth, bourbon soaked oak notes meshing with sweet, creamy chocolate. Woody, nutty, rustic, lightly boozy with lots of a vanilla & a little coconut on the back-end. Not much of the original hoppage is present in the aroma. The taste starts with some unexpected dark-fruit sweetness but is quickly followed with lots of chocolate & lots of barrel. Milky cocoa, heavy oak, whiskey, wood, & more creamy vanilla. Hops actually make a comeback on the palate... light ashy bitterness with a hint of citrus pith undertone. Draft pour at GTMW 2013. Pours a really nice looking deep brown with a small tan head. Vanilla, brown sugar, oak, bourbon, and caramel sit atop dark chocolate, rich roast, and earthy hops. Draft pour on tap at GTMW 2013 (Madison, WI). Pours a darker deep blackish brown hue. Firm hazy dark body. Frothy light brown head atop sticks around large, laces well. Aromas are bourbon, oak, and vanilla. Gentle spiciness, some earthy hops, toast and black malts. Initial is medium bodied, a firm barrel but not hot. A bit dry and tannic as we move on. Front is a bit more girthy, oak and some spirit warmth. Cocoa, toast, and gentle dryness. Some dryness, mellow hop presence hits into the backend. A touch warm, dry, and toasty. Some black malt, cocoa, firm barrel. Not too cumbersome, still some decent hop presence. Nice, but not for everyone.
