On tap at Short’s Summer Kickoff Party. Pours black with a thin tan head. Bourbon and booze in the aroma. Taste is the same with a bit of sweetness in the finish. Pretty spectacular. kmweaver (3208) - Petaluma, California, USA - MAY 9, 2008
22oz bottle, courtesy of hoppymeal. Thanks, Derek! Pours a dark, reddish-cola color; light tan head with patchy, fine-bubbled lacing. Very nice, blended bourbon presence in the aroma; toasty oak, milk chocolate, and caramel; generous, toasty barrel presence in the aroma; soft, chewy nose. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: lightly carbonated; soft, toasty bourbon character showing vanilla and minimal alcohol, if any; dark chocolate, caramel, nougat, and soft, toasty vanilla; velvety mouthfeel, toasty wood and oakiness; just a carefully blended, toasty and generous beer; very drinkable. Lengthy finish, showing cocoa, dark chocolate, and toasty oak and vanilla; barrel presence is beautifully integrated. mkobes (2142) - paramus, New Jersey, USA - JUN 15, 2008
Bottle. Deep brown in color with a little off white head. Malty fruity vanilla and chocolatety aroma. Molasses smokey notes. Sweet chocolatety roasty flavor. Vanilla notes. Sweet tasting. Full bodied. Very drinkable. Great. Odeed (1806) - Bakersfield, California, USA - JUL 7, 2008
orange/brown body with a small light brown head.the aroma is a nice mix of bourbon, vanilla, wood, and some roasted malts.flavor is much of the same with some dark fruit thrown in.well balanced and still full of that b"ba" flavor. GAManiac (1946) - Atlanta, Georgia, USA - AUG 25, 2008
22oz bomber. Pours deep, deep mahogany with a bubbly two-finger tan head that lingers for a little while and leaves a trace of lacing.
Smell is complex and interesting with bourbon definitely showing up and burning the nose a little. There is also tons of dark fruit with raisins and even grapes on top a very sweet malt base with brown sugar as well.
Taste is just as interesting as the nose with an initial sweetness of sugar and caramel. Dark fruits show throughout on top of a roasted malt base before giving way to a tingling alcohol finish.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied with good carbonation and leaves a sticky sweet aftertaste tinged with booze.
This is one of the best schwarzbiers I’ve ever had and I think the bourbon barrel use is very well done. This is my first Shorts brew and I’m looking forward to more. Highly recommended!

22oz beer. Great beer. Almost a meal. Pours black with a medium head. Slight aroma of bourbon mixed in with sugar and other fruits. after4ever (8025) - Mukilteo, Washington, USA - NOV 2, 2008
12-oz. Thanks, BVC! Crystal clear rubied dark amber. Thin, loose tan head. Bourbon, vanilla, oak, and caramel on the nose. Creamy, medium body. Figs, vanilla, caramel, bourbon and oak on the mid-palate. Nice mild finish. This one jumped up and grabbed attention; nice stuff for sure. GodOfThunder (1271) - Orlando, Florida, USA - DEC 5, 2008
Special thanks to Beerlando for bringing this great brew. Brown with a tan head. Funky vanilla, red grape and oak flavors with a slight mustiness and bitterness. The bourbon barrel aging really adds to this. A little Jolly Pumpkin-esque. Awesome beer. Beerlando (3343) - Orlando, Florida, USA - DEC 6, 2008
Bomber. Pours a dark cola brown color with a small, foamy, cream colored head. A sudsy, sheeting wash of froth rejoins the body almost entirely. The aroma is completely out of left field....I can not believe how much it reminds me of a Jolly Pumpkin beer. A dark cocoa malt base shows formidable notes of soured, funky oak, vanilla, moderate spices, and dry brett. Sour mash Kentucky bourbon shows subtly on the nose. The flavor profile is even more sour and bretty than the aroma indicates. The funky, old, vanilla laden oak gives just the right amount of bourbon heat, while lactose serves as a bridge to the bittersweet, dark cocoa maltiness. Substantial in both body and carbonation, the brett imparts its signature dry, parching mouthfeel, sourness intensifying on the finish. This is a great beer. If I had to sum it up into a single phrase, it would be - Bourbon Barrel Aged Jolly Pumpkin Madrugada Obscura. It really is almost a dead ringer. sebletitje (10293) - Enghien, BELGIUM - DEC 10, 2008
All hails to mighty tpd975 for making my 600th review a good one.
Pours black with tan head.
Aroma has plenty of the bourbon nose, rich but remains very subtle and light.
Taste, lots of roastiness, chocolate malts and light hints of bourbon.
The overall mouthfeel is very enjoyable and leaves an aftertaste almost mocha.
I really could not pick up any bitterness or tartness.
This is definitely a new and interesting twist to Schwarzbier. Thumbs up.
