Michigan Winter Beer Festival. Outstanding barley wine. Quite tangy with sweet notes. Bourbon barrel adds just the right amount of spice/tannin.
FoBAB 2017. Dark copper with minimal ecru head. Nose caramel, barrel, light sweet make. Taste caramel, toffee, red fruit. paintedmaple (671) - People’s Republic of Bloomington, Indiana, USA - JUN 29, 2014
On tap...this barley wine has the complexity and character of fine aged wine as well as some great bourbon notes. The sweet dark fruits are well balanced with perfumed hops and finishes with a bittersweet bite. Nice alexsdad06 (11238) - West Chester, Ohio, USA - APR 22, 2014
Draft sample at RBSG from notes (2nd time from growler). Pours a dark cola brown with reddish highlights and a small off white head. The aroma and flavor had sweet caramel malts, heavy bourbon, vanilla, wood, with some dark fruits coming in mid palate. A bit boozy, but flavor is good. tectactoe (3125) - Michigan, USA - MAR 2, 2014
UPDATED: APR 2, 2014 Growler: Thanks to Jeff for this other awesome Shorts hook-up! Deep, deep brown body with slightly translucent edges... no head forms, only a very fine, tan ring. Aroma is full of unattenuation, sweet residual sugars, warming & sweet bourbon, perfume, light toffee, caramel covered candies, anise, & dried, dark fruits like plums & raisins. Flavor is a sticky caramel & bourbon bath up front, covered a big profile of oak. Date & prune purée, light black licorice, wood, & a big, finishing perfume-y floral presence... from the hops, I’m assuming? Boozy, bourbon soaked dark fruit finish. Medium-heavy mouth feel, lightly sticky. This is some seriously great stuff! Certainly showcases what Shorts is capable of. Not the best barrel aged barleywine I’ve had, but it’s definitely a winner. bpar73 (1199) - Bellaire, Michigan, USA - FEB 28, 2014
On tap at the brewpub. Pours brown with a beige head. Aroma of bourbon, caramel, dark fruit, and chocolate. Flavor of bourbon, caramel, roasted malt, and. vanilla, Great stuff.

Growler thanks to mikem409. Fairly dark brown with minimal head. Nose is mostly bourbon. A light toastiness I the nose as well with some caramelization sugar notes. Taste is mostly bourbon with a moderately sweet malt presence. Fairly bitter. A significant amount of alcohol warning. Pretty tasty. DrewFace (970) - Melbourne, Florida, USA - FEB 22, 2014
Growler share thanks to Homer321. Bourbon barrel sweet choco mamma oaky vanilla and more bourbon. Sexy choco mamma roasty chocolate bourbon and oak...boost = detected. Yum alliance100 (1190) - Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA - FEB 15, 2014
Draft at Logans Alley - pours a deep brown with off white head. Big vanilla and bourbon oak aromas. Taste is toffee meets raisins. Medium sweetness. Alittle alcohol is noticeable . Good , one of the better offerings from Shorts that I’ve had. koleminer20 (4176) - Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA - AUG 24, 2013
Draft at HopCat in East Lansing. Pours a deep dark ruby, with essentially zero head with not a lot of lace to speak of. The smell is overwhelmingly bourbon filled with heavy vanilla notes. The taste is the complex barleywine taste I’m looking for. There is a lot of vanilla that fades into a roasty malt complexity that begins to show heat. By the time the beer finishes, the booze is there, and at 11.8%, it is something that can be expected. The beer coats your mouth, allowing that flavor and boozyness to just hang for a few moments, which is surprisingly enjoyable.
