COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Double India Black Ale aged in Bourbon barrels. An ale so dark and black that it’s completely impenetrable to light, with a layered nose of rich sweetness and unexpected earthy hoppiness. This hefty bodied beer presents big bitter black barley and roasted coffee flavors, along with subtle compliments of dark fruit and green hops. After aging in Bourbon barrels for over 9 months, strong flavors of vanilla and charred oak provide an array of compliments, along with some unique hazelnut characteristics.

Had this beer at the GTMW 2013 and just getting around to rating it. Poured black with frothy head. Aroma-molasses, bourbon and vanilla. Taste is so sweet and reminds me of a rich chocolate cake. Overall I loved this beer. Probably my favorite beer from the festival. Had at least 4 pours of this excellent beer!

Sample at 2013 MBG Winter Beer Festival. Darker, slicker and more aroma than the original.

UPDATED: APR 28, 2014 Tap: Sludgy, complete darkness with a frothy, tan foam head showing decent retention & leaving a little bit of lacing behind. Aroma has wonderfully smooth, bourbon soaked oak notes meshing with sweet, creamy chocolate. Woody, nutty, rustic, lightly boozy with lots of a vanilla & a little coconut on the back-end. Not much of the original hoppage is present in the aroma. The taste starts with some unexpected dark-fruit sweetness but is quickly followed with lots of chocolate & lots of barrel. Milky cocoa, heavy oak, whiskey, wood, & more creamy vanilla. Hops actually make a comeback on the palate... light ashy bitterness with a hint of citrus pith undertone. Finish of dark fudge cake topped with bourbon maple syrup & wood chips. Delicious. Essentially a hoppy, barrel aged stout.... So tasty!

(Critique chaotique du extreme beer fest 2013): Bien corsée, torréfaction, peu de houblons pour une ipa mais une agréable balance. Solide.

On tap at the Shorts Anniversary Party. Was very pumped to try this one. After loving the original I had high hopes. And it did not disappoint. Full of chocolate, vanilla, bourbon, a ton of dark fruit, and coffee flavors. One of my favorites of the event. I would absolutely love to have some more. Keep it up Shorts.

On tap: The aroma consists of chocolate, maple syrup, light coffee, bourbon, and vanilla. It’s a dark brown with no transparency and a small tan head. The flavor starts with chocolate and maple syrup. The finish has some light pine, vanilla, bourbon, and a touch of coffee. It’s medium bodied light-moderate carbonation.

Draft pour at GTMW 2013. Pours a really nice looking deep brown with a small tan head. Vanilla, brown sugar, oak, bourbon, and caramel sit atop dark chocolate, rich roast, and earthy hops. Really unusual juxtaposition. Medium-bodied, with a smooth, bitter, sweet mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Unique. I enjoyed this a lot.

On tap at the brewpub, Black pour with a creamy tan head. Alcohol sweetness and bourbon dominate the taste and aroma.
