Bottle:   Amber colored, moderate frothy white head, mild carbonation, nice lacing.   Soft earthy hop nose, a bit soily and grainy.   Very similar on the tongue, earthy/soily sort of maltiness, with the hop aspect lagging behind.   Not terribly bright, and to me certainly not IPA material.   Pale Ale, certainly, but IPA... I think not.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate, or fairly average.   Finishes with that earthy/soily malt profile that I associate with some poorly made Organic ales.   This one just didnt sit well with me, not vibrant nor terribly hoppy.   The malt profile seemed to dominate, and its a profile I don’t much care for.   Not a bad beer, but the soily/earthiness just irks me when its not sweet, heavy, or appropriately hopped up.   Out of balance for me.   Thanks for the bottle Kevin! madmitch76 (25519) - , Essex, ENGLAND - JUL 30, 2012

’Hanging Frank’ bottle. Hazy amber beer, huge frothy white head. Semi soft dry palate. Head is a little sherbetty. Sharp limey hops, tangy. Trace of lemon. Some softer orange underneath accompanied by pine. Dry minerally finish. Nice!
Had this a couple of years ago as Hangin Frank. Bought it this time as ControversiALE. Some people don’t know a tribute when they see one. Aroma: A lot of citrus hops attack the nostrils in this beer. Smells like hops and B.O. It’s wonderful. Appearance: Very clear, light orange color. One finger, white head. Taste: Bitter. Citrus. The hops and B.O. taste like it smells. It’s wonderful. Palate: Medium body with a bitter finish. Overall: This is a great beer, start to finish. Short’s makes so many different beers they have hits and misses. This one is a hit. Dogbrick (13751) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - JUL 22, 2012
Sample at Kris’ Picks Beer Tasting at Hills Market on 07/19/12: Clear amber-orange color with a medium off-white head that diminishes steadily. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of hops, citrus and malt. Light-bodied with a zesty citrus character and notes of hops and sweet malt. The finish is crisp and fruity with a grapefruity hops aftertaste. Above average overall. Thanks to ericandersnavy for sharing this bottle.
The beer pours an orange color with a white head. The aroma is full of very resinous hops, as well as some toffee and dank notes. The flavor is similar. There is a strong mix of orange, pine and resin in the flavor, as well as some toffee malt which keeps the bitterness from being overpowering. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.
