The ginger gives a delicate aroma in this beer. The flavor is ginger and not as marked as one might expect in terms of flavor, but it leaves, however, a slight spicy note in the finish. From backlog. Draft at Old Chicago. Pours a cloudy pale orange color with a small head, leaves some lacing. Smells like a hefeweizen mixed with ginger. Bottled @ Camping Ratebeers 2014, small sample. Slight hazy golden color, medium head. Aroma has some rye, bit citrussy hops, slight spicy, ginger indeed, slight tart. Bottle: Muddy, orange-amber with some copper highlights. Dark hued for a hefeweizen. Nearly opaque, mild translucency at the edges. Even a straight pour produces a measly, thin white film on top... Again, atypical for the style. The nose comprises of LOTS of ginger with very apparent hefeweizen yeast. Typical notes of peppery clove, bubblegum, & banana esters are there, but play secondary to the ginger. Ginger is even more potent on the palate. Spicy, but not too abrasive thanks to the chunky balance of clove, white pepper, & yeast esters present. Some vague fruity sweetness in the aftertaste, hint of sugary sweetness with lingering clove & ginger. Decent mouth feel, chewy & pretty thick. Unique, but basically ginger root dropped into merely a decent hefeweizen. I don’t normally love ginger but I think it works somewhat well with the hefe yeast flavors.
