Short’s Kind Ale a.k.a. Harvest Ale, is a seasonal beer made each fall to celebrate a successful growing season. True to tradition, we commemorate the earth’s agricultural environment by using freshly picked hops to “wet hop” this brew. Straight from the fields on Leelanau Peninsula, local hops impart a mellow earthiness to this ale that lead to moderate bitter tones and a subtle sweetness in the finish.

Kind Ale was first brewed as a single batch at our Elk Rapids production facility in September of 2009. The label art for Kind Ale is a picture of Tony Hansen holding up some of the first ever usable mature hops grown in Northern Michigan. The first year the beer was brewed, Joe Short and Tony Hansen visited hop fields on Old Mission Peninsula to watch the hops get picked, before loading them into their truck and personally driving them back to Elk Rapids to brew with that day.

Bottle thanks to Styles. Light copper color with a foamy/creamy white head. Aroma is strongly hoppy - almost earthy/herbal. Medium plus body with foamy carbonation. Flavor is very strong, almost minty, hop over somewhat harshly roasted caramel. Finishes like the hop was fruity. Really good stuff.

12 ounce bottle, opened 10/4/10. Pours a muddy amber with a colossal rocky brown head. Solid particules all over the place. This one is going to take forever to pour. Good head retention, good lacing, and as my friend would say, fascinating bubble structure. Aroma of tropical fruits, pineapple and floral hops. The taste is tropical fruits, mango, citrus and caramel malts. Bitter finish. There is something faintly off, though thankfully the worst symptom is the colossal head. A faint off-taste is present also, but thankfully its mostly covered by the hops. Medium bodied.

Fresh batch from December. Pours creamy, very lacey and foaming over golden coloured body. Aroma of the wet hops, taste of the wet hops. Hoppy and good wet hop bitterness, without shredding the palate. Abv not listed, but feels in the 6-7% range.

Bottle. Pours a hazy gold with a medium white head that lasts. Aroma has a nice pine hop aroma with a nice grain sweetness. Flavor began sweet from the malts but the hops build for a nice pine finish.

Draft to taster. Looks good; a very slightly hazy golden orange with foamy eggshell head that slowly dissipates into sticky lacing. Smells of piney and citrusy hops with a bittersweet backbone. Tastes like it smells with a medium-bodied mouthfeel. A solid fresh-hopped IPA.

12oz bottle pours a hazy, orange amber with a very frothy, creamy, lacing white head. Aroma is nice, noble hops, lemons, lightly floral, slightly herbaceous. Flavor is well balanced, sweet and malty without being overly sweet. Tinge of bitterness from the hops, citrus fruits, light spice, lightly herby. Finish is medium bodied and balanced.

Bottled. Poured clear medium golden with a short cap of off-white head that was easily-resuscitated. The aroma picked up honey and pale malts surrounded by pineapple and pine hoppage.. touches of ginger and woody notes too.. deep underlying honeycomb. The flavor found more of the honey at the core along with some lighter bread.. moderate bitterness around in the form of pineapple and grapefruit.. sticky honey and pine resin on the finish. Medium-bodied and tacky on the palate, with lots of residual bitterness in the end.. there was some good stuff in here, but it didn’t come together for me.
